S3 cooler question
« on: April 04, 2016, 08:10:16 pm »
Hi everyone,
Just got a alloy s3 intercooler, does not come with any hoses
My question is will my hoses fit it or will I need to get s3 ones?
Also is there anything else I need to fit it ?

Thanks in advance

You don't have to get the S3 hoses, you can modify your original ones.

You will have to cut the coupler off at the turbo discharge side where it joins the cooler and use a suitable jubilee clip  :happy2:

Obviously if you want to return to standard at some point, you might be better off picking up a spare discharge hose

IIRC i think you also need slightly longer bolts for fixing the cooler, hopefully someone will confirm

^^^

Close, need different style of bolts. Need M6 X 16mm (x10)
The oem GTI uses bolts for the plastic tanks which have a course thread and not to be used on the alloy intercooler.

To modify the GTI hoses user his guide:

(Don't need a vice can be crushed with you foot)

You can get genuine items for less than 350 € from Germany with shipping cost included. That's a lot cheaper than the price v4rley wrote. Well, a friend of mine bought one from German online store instead of buying it directly from Audi and I'm in Portugal.

I merely answered the asked question of how much from Audi.

I'm sure pudding is fully aware of eBay and was curious to what the dealers are asking these days as somethings can be good value although not in this case. They are often avalibe from Germany for £275.

You are talking about s3 ic so I'll ask here, does it fit to 1.9 tdi without any mods? As I know 1.9 and for example 2.0 or tfsi uses different front support. We call it TV  :signLOL:

Mk5 Golfs only have FMIC, older mk4 Golfs VP110 and some other PD engines had SMIC. So all mk5s with a turbo can easily fit a S3 IC, AFAIK.

Cheers guys, not as much as I was expecting!   Seems like a decent part with ally end tanks and a bit thicker than the GTI one.

As for price, I've got a mate who works at an Audi dealer and usually sort me out with a good price, so I'll compare that to other options!

It's much better than the GTI one: bigger core, good quality aluminium and good enough flow for 350 BHP, if I'm not mistaken.

Are you on a ko3 or a ko4 pudding? The reason I am asking is I have spent a lot of time recently looking into the newer type s3 and golf r(mk6) ic's with the plastic ends and it would seem that ecs spent a bit of time testing both the s3 with Ally ends against the one with plastic ones. They found that by measurements the plastic ended one was approx 20-22% greater volume area than our standard ones and the ally one was around 25%. Flow wise and efficiency were pretty much identical and both were a great improvement over our standard ones. Better still, the plastic ended one meant they didn't require new bolts either.

I have an airtec one fitted to mine (ko3), but I will be swapping it with a mate who has a golf r, as I reckon the airtec is a bit overkill on the ko3, and the golf r one would be better suited.

Just my 2p. Don't know how much they go for compared with the ally ended ones, as I haven't looked.
