edition 30 mods
« on: April 10, 2016, 12:04:31 am »
hi guys

wanted some advice to see if the mods I have got lined up are the best way to go in my ed30. so far I've got the following bits:
forge twin intercooler
forge twin intake
decat

may possibly get the hpfp but still contemplating if it's going to be worth the money and also if I should get a performance exhaust to go with the decat or not?

what power are you after.

just an exhaust will take you to 310/320bhp. then you need to think bigger brakes etc

pretty sure people don't rate the forge twintake

pre-cat delete is a good start. and 3 inch turbo back exhaust

I had a twintake - sounded like Darth Vader having an asthma attack, which made me happy!
But for overall performance Revo intakes are considered the best for gains

looking for figures in mid 300's.  spoke to r tech and he was very much against me using the forge bits but how much difference will there actually be in terms of power compared to other bits available like I know a revo induction and peron intercooler will be best for figures from research but can the forge stuff I currently have really be that restrictive and will the figures be way off what they would be with revo and peron?

Pre cat delete a decat?

That's a new one.

Upgrade your brakes, even when at 300 horses they are not up to the job,I was finding myself consciously braking 20 yards in advance as no confidnce in them,R32 ones do the job

I think with the twintercooler, it's extra volume for the turbo to fill, so can be a fair bit of pressure drop there.

How about a MK6 R intercooler for around £250 from the dealer?  OEM quality, bolts right in, cheap and there's proven gains which reduces intake temps on sustained high rpm pulls, so perfect for a KO4 engine.

Add to that a 3" downpipe (which usually stays 3" to half way under the car before joining the OEM system) and see where that takes you.

After that you can add an intake and cat back if you want more.

Just the DP and intercooler + software should take you to 330-340ish.

It's highly likely you will need a HPFP to sustain that kind of torque though.  Loba is arguably the best, but also the most expensive.

At what level does the stock catback become restrictive?

The standard system is 2.5", or 60mm or something, which isn't too bad.  It's probably the big suitcase silencer that's the main restriction.  Hard to say what the hp limit is but plenty of GTIs/ED30s make good power on the standard cat back .

Thanks,

I'm at that stage where I'm debating what turbo to upgrade to. umming and arring etc.

just don't want to fit a capable turbo then not get good results as it catback is holding back the flow.
Ive seen a few threads with people running stock catback but cant seem to remember any turbo setups or figures they achieved

seems you're talking about a turbo upgrade on an Ed 30 (ed30 thread at least...), but running a standard exhaust?
Paradox indeed...

I don't have a ed30 but the turbo is still any upgrade for me. whatever turbo I go for it wont be ran flat out. and no it wont be a standard exhaust, Dp is already fitted with stock catback

If it were me I would just see what the standard cat back is capable of in your application and go from there.  If it meets your hp goals, I can't see any point in spending the money needlessly tbh, unless of course you do actually want more noise, different tailpipes etc.  I'd rather sink a grand+ into decent suspension or brakes than a few bits of bent pipe and a silencer!

As others have recommended, ditch the forge bits. . . They just don't flow well enough for the K04 (fine on a 'normal GTI')

EVOMS or Revo intake, Audi S3 intercooler is an improvement (but stock will see 350bhp), you need APR or LOBA HPFP and a downpipe
