Traded my old golf via a independent dealer, my question is, will my tax be returned once the trade slip is sent back to dvla? Or will the tax be returned when the trader has sold the car? Thanks

The tax should be returned to you as soon as the details have changed.

You should of recieved v5c/3 part of log book and follow instructions on that.

Six weeks from the day of trade in is the typical time for they Gov/system to pay you back but collects it straight away.
