MDI Interface
« on: January 13, 2010, 01:35:12 pm »
Chaps,

I've just had this arrive  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400092819788&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Does anyone have the part number that connects the arm rest MDI interface to the RNS-510 and if so, how much is it please?
Hopefully I won't need anything more than this 'amp' lead (as it says on the bottom of the MDI) and then it's just a case of installing

Thanks,
Pete.
Pete

I like the idea of that. Never understood why mine came with RNS 510 and CD changer.  :stupid:

It looks like the harness you need is listed in this auction, they quote its cost £59 separately.

Let us know how it pans out as I fancy one of these. You could also try VrsStu he may be able to help you.

It looks like the one you need although at £48 delivered is a bit steep, have you tried a VW dealer if you ask nicely you usually get a 10 discount or so.

I called up Parkway today Rob. They said it can't be purchased on its own and even if it could, I don't doubt for a minute it'd be more than £48 inc vat anyway.

I just want to get it in now so that price is okay I suppose.
Doesn't look like the lead is long enough though to get from my arm rest to the back of the RNS-510?

I suppose overall it dosn't work out to bad at £150 all in, still at least £50 quid cheaper than other ebay sales of the MDI. Let me know how you get on as I'm after one of these as well.

PS Talked about this with VRStu and he tells me you need to get it coded but after looking into this it looks quite simple.

^ Will do fella  :happy2:
As you say £150 is a neat price really. I'm happy to put that much out for it. The only thing I'd mention is I didn't get an ipod lead with the MDI from the link I specified. Will call them and ask for it just for the principal even though I won't use it, as I know they're £20+ each.

I see, thanks for asking him. I've got VCDS so I'll read up on the coding once the lead has arrived.
Can stu comment on the length of the lead i.e. will I need an extension or not? It doesn't look more than a meter long stretched out  :ashamed:

Theres a guide here to fit it:

and here

PM Stu for details about the cable length as I know he's fitted one before.

The cable will be long enough to reach the armrest

It will work without coding but if you want you just need to enable device 2E in the can gateway, make sure you use the latest version of VCDS otherwise 2E won't be an option

I used the OEM kit which contains everything you need, nice and neat.

As above, you simply need to add the MDi to the gateway.

The controller can be fixed to the top of the glovebox and the lead then runs into the glove box.

If you want it in the armrest then i'd suggest you need to mount the controller under the ashtray.

There are two versions of the MDI, the glovebox version which has a separate controller, and the armrest version which has the controller built in for those lucky enough to have a cd changer in the armrest or are mad enough to retrofit the cd changer armrest

The man knows his stuff!

The glovebox version is rumoured to not be compatible with version "A" RNS-510's.

Thanks Stu + Camel + Pazz

No idea what version of the RNS-510 I have  :ashamed:

When you refer to the glovebox, does the MDI sit where I've currently got my drivers manual/guide, the top little shelf at the top inside of the glovebox?

VW just say that the interface is mounted behind the dash and the USB/Ipod lead is available inside the glovebox

so all you see is ...

I know of people who have a RNS 'A' and the armrest version of the MDI without any issues
