Oil filter change

I'm planning on doing oil & filter change. Wondered if people tend to use filter housing drain tool like this one: http://bit.ly/1VsFNl7
Occurs to me that might be a possibility of valve in housing sticking open & leaking.
What do people think/do.

Stick something up the thing and push the orange bit up and to one side. Done it like that the last 3 times... no bother.

I read stories of people damaging it so I just put a larger tray bucket underneath and just took the whole filter housing off. Not much mess at all.

Cheers. Think I'll do the same. Looks like a fragile part that might become brittle with age.

I changed my oil and filter, removed the oil pan and cleaned out the oil pick up pipe today. I just pushed in the orange value, no bother at all.

Why does the Golf use the paper filter in the plastic canister?  Old Skool metal screw on filter much better imho... whack in a screwdriver and it's off (lol)... having said that I've done the GTI an easy 10+ now, just recently, on 155k! Still going strong... bothered a 7R the other day too, lol.

I remember my dad changing those on his old Volvo 240s. Maybe they changed due to "eco" reasons.

Was the same on the SAABs too, and just recently dropped the oil on the VW UP; that was one of them metal screwies, piece of piss to replace and no valence in the way either; just slightly obscured by the front bumper... love to whack on a bit of FI on that UP though.

The oil filter on a MK6 TDI 1.6 is a complete cock to do. Its in the most awkward place.

The plastic & paper filter on GTI doesn't seem like a great design to me. First car I've had that didn't use metal one piece filters. Also the first car that I've needed ramps in order to change the oil!

From my experience I'd say just as many come with metal type to paper ones. Even some of the newer vw's use the metal ones. I believe they started using paper ones for Eco reasons as already mentioned but why have vw used paper ones on older cars then use a metal one on some newer engines  another thing I'm sure car makers put certain bits on cars as they know they will make a ton of money from people buying new parts from them as they know they will break eg in this case a plastic oil filter housing. Same with fly by throttles and clutches. What's wrong with cable throttles and clutch, just more rubbish to go wrong.
