Canbus Version for Mk5 Headunit Swap

I've got a RCD510 headunit on order for my '07 GTi (to replace existing RCD300).  The canbus part number is 1K0 907 530K and from what I've read I'll suffer the battery drain issue unless I update this.

Am I right in thinking that the last letter of this part no. is the revision number, and that what I need is a canbus numbered 1K0 907 530L (or higher final letter)?

I realise that after fitting I'll need someone to access it electronically and tick the boxes as needed for my specific car, if anyone knows a well regarded independent in Surrey that can do this for sensible money that would be good!

There are members here who sell them pre-coded, so you can replace it yourself without needing a VCDS cable. You need a L or from Q to above.

Ok, interesting...think it's supposed to be quite a low level of drain.  Have you ever left car for a good few days without driving (maybe while on holiday), and still found no problem?

Have been thinking that I should just check the drain with my meter with the RCD300 still in place, and measure again after fitting the RCD510.  I can then decide from there whether I need the later canbus.

Not all revision firmwares are compatible. We'd have to see the VCDS scan of the Can Gateway to know.

If your CAN gateway is in the same place as my Edition 30's is (above the pedals), it's a bit more than a 5 min job      I couldn't get my hands up there.  Too much crap in the way.  I had to attack it from above via the access panel under the wiper mechanism, so it's wipers off, wiper mech out....all of it! 

I thought it was just the older RNS units that caused the battery drain?   Didn't know RCDs did it as well!

Could just get my hand through the gap, right pain though, could either see it or get my hand to it but not both at the same time, lots of sharp edges too!

Think I'll get the RCD510 in over the w/e, check the drain situation (I have a meter) then sort the canbus if it turns out to be necessary.

i replaced it when i upgraded ro RNS, with 7N0 907 530AN
but was thinking of putting it back

Yeap, unless you are going to put 2nd generation unit like RCD300, but if keeping RNS - you must change it.

It depends on the RNS version as the newer ones can solve the battery drain issue with software tweaks.   I have the original CAN gateway in my ED30 and an RNS510 'Q' and I don't have battery drain problems.   Well, I left the car at Gatwick for 2 weeks and it fired right up when I got back

RNS version doesnt matter, you have to write gateway part of rns firmware to old one from A version. Drain can't be more than 50mA. Rich just measure amperage, if you see battery drain - take the radio fuse out and if its gone - you need to change it.

Indeed the modified firmwares can solve the battery drain without upgrading the CAN Gateway in most cars. Just in a few cases that firmware tweak doesn't work.
