Outer CV joint is stuck
« on: May 02, 2016, 12:01:25 am »
Evening all,

I'm mid way through a outer Divers side CV boot change and the CV joint is stuck fast.

I have looked at quite a few guides about where to hit it but it just doesn't want to budge.

It has a hub bolt rather than nut, is this one of those joints that you can wind the bolt back in to press on the joint to pop it off?

Any tips for getting it off?

Its a 2006 Mk5 with DSG if that makes any difference.

Thanks, Dan

When I did mine 05 DSG it was really stuck as well. What are you hitting with? I tried for ages with rubber mallet, then a few good whacks with a club and it came off. Not sure if I should have used a club but it worked :happy2: Cant really advise on the bolt bit, not sure what you mean. Been a while since I did mine.

You can wind the bolt back in but you may damage the threads inside by whacking it.
Make sure the complete lower is separated from the ball joint so theres enough to move at the rear when you're smacking it.

I have a couple of good size wooden mallets and then moved onto a 1/2" socket extension bar as a drift, the shaft is of the car in a vice so Im able to hit it fairly hard.  As the end spline doesnt have a hub nut it has a hub bolt, if its wont back in it will press on the end of the spline to try and pull off the CV

Bolt shown below

Is there by any chance a retaining circlip in the greasy end under the boot?.

You can Tey wind the bolt back it but you may damage the threads inside by doing this.
Make sure the complete lower is separated from the ball joint so theres enough to move at the rear when you're smacking it.

The shaft is off the car in a vice so plenty of room to hit it, I have tried hitting the outer race cup and the inner splined section, some people recommend keeping the CV joint straight and some say tilt it over at an angle but neither seem to work.

That was also my concern with the bolt, i have seen a few guides on passats that seem to do it, but no idea if the joint is the same.  Its quite a fine pitch bolt as well, so any amount of damage to that first thread wouldn't be good

That was my first thought when it wouldn't come off, no there doesn't seem to be one and the CV boot kit for this car comes with the internal clip that the CV has to jump over

No don't hit the bolt as you've got the shaft in the vice and all it needs is a good few hard smacks where you're already hitting it but I'm guessing you've got a pretty seized cv joint.

Reminds me of the seized cv I had on the tt. I had my neighbour take it to his mates garage and fit a stretchy boot over it until I replaced both drive shafts from a company called J&R in Birmingham and they were pretty cheap but prices have inflated there since 2 years have passed.

no, it wouldn't be from hitting the bolt but from the end of the bolt pushing on the spine

The joint only came off 18 months ago when the garage put a new boot on - cheap non oem boots dont seem to last which is why I have a nice VW one to go on :-(

maybe I will give it another go today and see if I have any more luck

I've looked on goggle pictures and I'm. pretty sure your cv is seized solid and needs a heavy lump hammer to knock it off.

That bolt just goes into the cv end and does not touch the drive shaft. so pointless knocking it.

Popped to the local mechanic I know, a bigger bench and a bigger vice with a big copper headed mallet and it came off, took a good 15 mins of hitting it for it to come off.  The spines were nicely greased so it must have caught on the c-clip rather than siezed....bloody thing, he said they are not usually that bad
