Low fuel rail pressure, limp mode

All,

I have an 07 mk5 gti with around 78,000 miles. The car keeps coming up with the low fuel rail pressure fault code. I have had the fuel filter, cam follower and thrust sensor replaced. The fault code has been cleared, have driven around 50 miles running fine and then the car goes back into limp mode with the same error. The garage have reccomended hpfp and then even a new ecu if all else fails. Any suggestions???? Dont fancy splashing out £1500 for a new pump and ecu

You can pick up an upgraded HPFP off here and a used ECU of eBay for less than that! There's normally a pump or two for sale every month so keep your eyes posted, may as well fit an upgraded one as it makes a difference even at stock.

Again, keep your eyes peels for someone breaking a GTI on here as they may be able to help you source some replacement parts cheap.

Firstly, what are your fault codes?
Have you replaced the G247-high fuel pressure sensor on the rail? If you find the hpfp and lpfp are pumping as they should or think they are...you can try this before the spendy bits. The p/n is 06J-906-051-D

Dont know what garages you use but I'd advise a change to someone who is vag competent

That code relates to the camshaft lobe that controls the HPFP which in turn may have excessively worn causing fuel rail pressure fluctuation and going into limp mode around 4500rpm or WOT.

The fault code is P0087 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure: Too Low

The receipt I got from the garage says...new 'Thrust Sensor' part no S06J906051C.

Is this the G-247 high pressure fuel sensor you are talking about on the rail?

No, that's the "G410-Low Fuel Pressure Sensor" attached to the hpfp.  I would check, or better yet replace, the cam follower before you damage the hpfp and intake valve.  If fault is caused by the G410...it is incapable of reading the low pressure...and then the ecu cuts power because the ecu thinks the hpfp is unable to make high pressure. If the G410 sensor is not faulting, again, it may be a hardware issue like the cam follower or even a fuel filter...something upstream. But you have completed repairs? You mentioned new sensor on a receipt...
