ChrisGT's Black 5 door GT TDI 170

Gave the car a quick auto scan and it threw up 5 codes.

the egr one I knew about as it has been blanked off but not mapped out yet.

The abs and esp lights have been coming on intermittently lately while driving but always go off as soon as the car is switched off and switched on again. The scan suggests it's a wheel speed sensor at the rear left. I believe from research on the forum and other forums that the wheel bearing can be the culprit for this error so will get that checked out soon enough. Not too worried about it though.

The other codes I'll look into as I didn't know about them. The drivers window works perfectly though as does the intermittent wipe of the wipers.

The other day the heater started only working when on setting four... so it was either off or on full blast... Funny but not useful.

I had a similar problem a few years ago with my mk3 golf and it was the resistor pack that stopped working, I figured it was a similar problem. Google and searching the forum confirmed it, so I bought a new resistor pack for about £12 off ebay.

This is the new one which arrived super quick as I only ordered it on Monday evening and arrived today (wednesday) lunch time.



Was really easy to replace, just drop the foam out from under/behind the glove box and then it's right there, pulled out the old one and put in the new one, plugged it back in and all working perfectly again 

Here's the two side by side:



Guess it'll be the original one. Have heard that sometimes the motor is starting to fail which causes the resistor pack to fail so will keep an eye on that. If the resistor pack fails again then I'll replace the motor too.

Been getting quite a bit of noise from the clutch release bearing lately.

If the gearbox is coming off to replace that I figured I might as well replace the clutch friction plate and dmf so ordered the full sachs kit and it arrived yesterday. Just need to get it booked into the garage to get it done. Not a job I'm confident enough to do myself.



Got my new wheels all polished up and sealed with Gtechniq C5 and EXOv2 so just need to get them balanced and then can fit them.

Finally got around to fitting my new wheels today.

I bought them form a forum member a while ago and they were in good condition having been refurbished/powder coated not too long ago.

I gave them a good freshen up though with the following process:

Removed all old wheel weights,
Washed with bilberry wheel cleaner and various brushes,
Sprayed with ironx and left for a few minutes and then washed with Bilberry again to remove any ironx residue,
Dried,
polished with DA with mequiar's 205 and a microfiber pad,
Sealed with Gtechniq C5 and then coated with EXOv2,
re-balanced.

So here's the new wheels next to the old ones, a few pictures of them next to each other and then old and new on the car.











Really pleased with them and they will be really easy to keep clean now they're all sealed up.

While I had the front passenger side wheel off I noticed there is a cutout in the arch liner and you can see the end of the gearbox, there's a cap which appears to be seeping some fluid so have ordered a replacement as this seems to be fairly common and just need to replace the cap. cap part number is 02M301211B

took the front arch liners out to clean in behind them.

Really wasn't too bad, quite a few little stones etc but nothing major.

I also removed the foam from behind the wheel arch. These are the bits of foam that cause all the rust problems with the outer arches. they soak up water and hold it right against the edge/seam of the arch and of course they rust because they never dry out properly. Both arches have tiny amount of bubbling where the foam has been so will need replaced at some point but they're fin for now.

As you can see from the picture below, the ends of the foam are still full of water and it's been a few days since it rained/roads were wet.

Got some wheel nut covers to go with my new wheels. The centre caps on the old wheels covered them but now they're exposed so just helps neaten them up a bit. Gave them a coat of Gtechniq EXOv2 to help protect them and so they're easy to keep clean.

Got them on amazon for about £15 but they're a great fit and have the Volkswagen lettering on them. They came with the little metal pick to remove them too so have put that in the space in the boot that's cut into the polystyrene.

Gave the wheels a wash today, got to love well sealed wheels! So easy to clean and bead up nicely.

I bought smoked ones from ebay.

I followed the instructions in this video:

and it was fairly easy. One of the clips on the old indicator broke as I removed the top cover as you can see in the picture with the old and new ones side by side but not too bothered. Was going to keep them as spares so have kept the other one but just dumped the one with the broken clip.

Yeah, I'll keep a look out for the ones with black inserts as I think they'd look much nicer than the standard silver ones.

No, I don't have heated seats. It's the resistor pack for the heater blower. It would only work on setting four but has worked perfectly since I replaced the resistor pack

Had the car remapped today by celtic tuning. Mainly to get rid of the EGR functionality as it has been blanked off but also had him put on the celtic tuning stage one map instead of the superchips one that was on it.

All good but engine management light still on so scanned the car, been about a month since I scanned it last, and it's thrown up this:

Changed over indicators for smoked ones which I think look much neater.

I think it looks much neater now, they were a bit fiddly but fairly easy to change, was quite dirty inside so was a good chance to clean out the insides.



On the lookout for some genuine GTI headlights with the black inserts too. Not sure about the replica style ones on ebay if they'd be any good so think I'll hold out for some genuine ones. There were a pair for sale on here about a week ago but I didn't have enough posts to post on the thread or PM the seller and they're sold so will keep my eyes peeled.
