Help! MK5 GOLF TDI NOT STARTING BUT WAS RUNNING FINE?!
« on: May 05, 2016, 08:02:50 pm »
Basically had my pride and joy Mk5 VW Golf 1.9TDI for about 15months now with no mechanical issues at all. Went out yday and it was running fine, filled up day before that with some diesel ultimate, came to it this morning and it won't crank up. When I turn the key the first time, bearing in mind Has Always started with the first turn and after a second or two of cranking, started up but then immediately stopped. It would then Not start even after second or third time of trying, and Then because I was trying to start it, came up with a message on the dash saying STOP! Oil pressure, Engine off!
Now I've spoke to my mechanic who's going to try find time tomorrow to plug it in to see if any diagnostics come up with any answers (fingers crossed) just wondered if anyone has had the same problem or if anyone has any advice for a fellow enthusiast! Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

When you turn the ignition key to position two do you hear the fuel tank pump prime as that typical for your type of fault?

You should hear the priming noise every time you take the key out of the ignition then back to position two.

The oil pressure light came on as op said now would the fuel pump cause that?.

I'd say get it scanned with vcds and take it from there.

Would of said get a can of easy start and feed it through the intake pipe of the filter but you're oil pressure warning has illuminated so I won't recommend it.

All good advice and points you've reiterate but there's nothing wrong to do testes which he can do at no cost as the fitter could bring a pump and he'll have result in one visit if there's no priming noise.
The 1.9 aren't common for the oil problems like other models in the VW range.

Okay doylebros thanks for that idea, I'll try that when I get home tonight and see if she sounds like she's priming! When I was trying to start it up, the whole car just felt so rough as though it's being starved of something, fuel maybe so I'll check that and get bk to you guys!

Hi I've had my mechanic out after trying what doylebros said and it did make a noise when I put in the key and turned the key twice, so that rules that one out! My mechanic plugged it in and diagnosed two fault codes which were 05658- unknown component and 05659 and then nothing next to it. I did a bit of researching and found out that the codes 05658 and 05659 and glow plug cylinder 1 and glow plug cylinder 2. To be honest when I couldn't start it glow plugs did cross my mind because it's on 99k fvwsh and don't think it's had a new set anytime in the last 50k so hopefully job done once I've been to get some more. Anyone recommend best glowplugs for 1.9tdo BXE engine code??
