Wouldn't touch a Cat D regardless of cost unless using it for a track only project. The admin involved in getting one road legal is a pain and then it costs more to insure.

A cat d once repaired has to go to vosa and gets a inspection from top to bottom,the check goes through every thing

My sisters cat D 08 Honda didn't go through this. have vosa changed the regulations in the past two years?

No inspections needed anymore guys. Cat D is minor damage, can go straight back on the road with no issue

internet scaremongering at its best , Catagory D is likely uneconomical repair, my LCR was subject to a light front end damage back in 2013 when its value was around £20k and the car being only 2yr old, it needed a new bumper ,xenon headlight, wing mirror and a wheel. The lead time on parts/price/hire car your looking at a £4K-£5k repair bill. Easier for them t cut there losses and pay up especially in today's world of GAP insurance covering any shortfall

atleast I know it's had a bump, and paid less accordingly

Some folk out there have accidents and don't declare them, someone on face book with a bent S3 recently plotting to fix it up and flog it on at full price now this is what you need to look out for.

I'd buy cat d again no problem, to my knowledge cat d has never needed to be inspected by vosa,

Some might of been stolen recovered but the insurance has already paid out it's not as sinister as the scarmongerers would have you believe

Some people write-off (pun not intended) category D vehicles without doing their research properly. Category D vehicles are usually lightly damaged and no tests by VOSA are required for these vehicles - they can be repaired and put back on the road. This also does not increase insurance premiums (I've had one so I know).

Category C are usually damaged heavily whereby the insurance company declares them financially not viable to repair. Again, no inspection by VOSA required anymore. You can repair and put back on road.

For both categories above a new logbook will have to be applied for but I believe this is now also free to do. So no costs/headache other than the repair bills.

I personally have no issue buying category D vehicles as long as photographic evidence of the damage can be seen before purchase along with any receipts of the repair bills. As long as the repairs have been carried out by reputable garages then there is no issue.

For over 10 years I completely disregarded category C and D vehicles, but once I'd researched it properly there's nothing to be afraid of. There are some good bargains to be had from category D vehicles.

Cat D vehicles I agree with if you do your homework and check the vehicle out properly but cat C is a no no as my cousin just bought a fiesta 09 reg for 2100 and it's a f***** shed and I'm having to sort it out. the idiot bought the car and didn't even look in the boot and I lifted the carpet and the floor looked like Mike tison has been at it  :slap: :doh: :signLOL: the whole floor is damaged and front rear sides had been damaged too.

I dont mind Buying a Cat C or Cat D car as long as I see the repairs.
This is a Cat C R32 That I Bought.





This is how it was when I bought it.



All I had to do was fit 2 doors & have the side painted, No structural damage at all.

Like ChrisR said if you make sure you look into the history of the car repair invoices, pictures of previous damage that sort of thing then cat d and c are fine.

I had my golf for 5 years sold it on and it's still going strong. That was a cat C.  Also bought a Zafira VXR which had a flooded engine(water) new engine car and engine bought for £3.6k sold the car for £6k and that's was a gem of a car.

I certainly wouldn't touch one with major structural damage but the odd crumpled panel and front end damage not much of a problem these days.
