Upgrading Front Speakers
« on: May 19, 2016, 02:37:29 am »
Hi, I've bought a set of 3 way Hertz HSK 163 speakers to replace the standard VW ones; just wondered if I will need speaker adapter pods for the woofers, and if so which ones? Or is it simply a case of drilling out the old speakers and fixing the new ones in their place?  It's been a while since I've had the door cards off so I can't remember exactly what it's like inside! Cheers

Ok cheers. Which speakers did you put in? Is it easy enough to fit them and crossover in behind the door cards?

I fitted ground zero in mine but the cross overs were to big to go in the doors, but members on here have put them in with the hertz ones, also ran new speaker wire to them as am running amps

I'm going without an amp to start with, which I know people will say Is wrong, but I may add one in future.

Had a look inside the door card over the weekend  and it doesn't look like there is enough space for the Hertz crossover. Could I use the Hertz speakers with the VW crossover or do I need to use the Hertz one?
Also didn't realise I will need something to mount the mids on so had to abort the install for another day.

I take it your car only has the 2 speakers in each front door? Mine was also like this and I had to make up some adaptor plates out of 3mm thick plastic sheet I bought off eBay to be able to fit the mid speakers in the door cards.

Hi, well there are the mids and the woofers in the front doors plus the tweeters in the triangle shaped fitting by the pillar.
Yes the mid is the problem -I will need to do something similar to your solution with the plastic sheet. It will have to be something very slim in order to fit the 3.5" mid speaker in the space.
I can't see how I can fit the crossovers though without modifying the door card somehow or maybe fit them under the seats but that would mean extending all the speaker cabling into the car.

I fitted a rainbow system to mine which has 2 crossovers. Both of the I attached to the door card. One in the bottom corner at an angle and the other underneath the arm rest towards the rear edge of the door card. Mines a 3 door so maybe there's more room if yours is a 5 door?

3 door definitely has more space and what the 5 door is lacking.

Has anyone thought of fitting the crossovers to the window regulator side by removing the outer skin as there's bound to be loads of space behind there?.

Mine is a 5 door. The only space would be to take out the VW crossover and fix the new one there in its place, but even that might not fit as the Hertz crossovers are twice the size of the VW one.

Ok thanks I didn't realise there was a difference between the 3 and 5 door in that sense.
I think the crossover would get in the way of the window when it's down and it could get damaged by rain water if in the outer skin?

Not if you do what I did with my mark 3 lol wrap them in parts bags  :happy2: I'm not dumb and there's always space in the doors.  :P

Lol Don't think I will do that!
I think I will have to modify the door cards to get the crossovers to fit.
Also the 165mm pods I bought for the woofers were far too small? Looks like the size I need is nearer 200mm?

Yes my Rainbow speakers were 200mm (8"). I used Autoleads pods. You may have to remove the circular parts of the door cards that the original speakers sit inside as it won't go over the larger speakers.
