r-tech remap clutch help
« on: May 23, 2016, 10:46:59 pm »
hello all,

just had a stage 1 r-tech remap on my 2007 60k miles mk5 gti. (255/320) less than 24 hours in and the clutch is slipping in 6th.  :sad1:
what do I do?
1.ask r-tech to turn the torque down
2. fit a new oe luk clutch
3 fit a new oe clutch and flywheel
4 fit a uprated clutch.
5. drive around it as the clutch was fine on oe power and only slips due to the high torque in 6th.

I'm a bit lost as to what to do as I want the car to be right but don't want/have the money to have to fork out as I had not expected the oe clutch to give in so easy (silly me for not doing the research I guess)

How can you tell it's slipping in such a high gear?

Drive up a steep hill and floor it in a higher gear and see if it still does it.

if I put the car in 6th at 60mph and floor it, it slips (ie revs rise)

R-Tech told me they deliberately derated mine to 246/295 to make it clutch friendly - but I think that's because mine is quite a senior GTI,  so they probably thought best be safe.

The ooomph from that keeps me grinning like an idiot with no slippage as you've described it so if you did back to them you know that's a viable option...

Its perfectly fine to leave it for now, not really dangerous. Just don't floor it at low RPM's or launch and it should be fine and will probably last for months. Then replace with an uprated one would be my choice. Really depends if you plan on keeping the car long or modding further etc...

Drive around the issue (i.e. drive it properly and rev the thing!) until you have the money to change the clutch and DMF. If sticking with stage 1 or stage 2 then a standard one is fine..... Parts are around the £300-350 mark, plus labour

Do you not have switchable maps?

I have r-tech stage 1 at 268/334 and get no clutch slip.

I think i'm just lucky, or i just don't push it enough.

If it were me i would upgrade clutch to something that can take the extra torque so that you have piece of mind.

You def don't need a updated clutch at stage 1 or 2 on a K03 car. I am on stage 2+ on a edition 30, aroubd 370bhp on a new standard clutch. It's done 5k without issue.

Thanks for the replies. I did ask for switchable maps but nik said my ecu would not take them. Im waiting for nik to come in today to speak with him regarding the issue. I dont really want to go down the upgraded clutch path but i also dont want to put another luk in and still find it slips.

It will not slip on a new standard clutch. Mine started slipping at about 50k miles on stage 1, changed it out for a new LUK standard clutch and DMF

Unless you heavily abuse it, a new clutch will last a long time. I'm stage 2+ with WMI now, so been at all stages since the clutch went in 12-13k miles ago....... all ok so far but I don't launch it or load it up in high gears

I'm with Dan_FR on the luk clutch as I replaced mine on the previous motor before a remap as it was slipping at two years after ownership. After the map I did abuse the car to some extent but within moderation as it was pride and joy :signLOL: Clutch was still strong when I sold it to the chap who came from Newcastle.

Performance clutch tend to wear quicker from what people have told me so I'd stay safe and go for OEM. some cars have 350 bhp one oem clutches

I was in a similar position. Decided to go for an uprated clutch instead of oem, just in case I decide to go further than Stage 2 in the future.

@Blackgtiman

Fit an uprated Organic clutch combined with a OEM DMF (personnal preference Id recommend Helix so speak to Alex at AKS Tuning). I ragged the hell out of my 2+ Eddy for 3 years and the Helix Clutch was immense.
