When ac is turned on, revs will suddenly drop under engine load so start the bloody car and get your torch light down there

Ok I did do that and I couldn't tell if it was running. I imagine if it did kick in that I'd notice a good bit of vibration or something from it but nothing!

I'll take a better look when I have someone with me tomorrow.

Looking online, it looks to be very very expensive!!!

If you're patient you can here it click on and off but judging by what your saying it's probably fookered as it is a common fault.

Looking like its done for. I don't fancy shelling out €1000 plus for it considerin I just wanted to get my alloys resurfaced so it looks like I'll go Windows done for the foreseeable future!

Seriously £1000  ebay job buddy or even breaking gti's on ebay. £40 -£100 can't be as bad as the above price.
