Lower ball joint removal
« on: June 02, 2016, 08:26:45 pm »
Need to change me lower ball joint... Is it possible to remove from the hub without having to remove the driveshaft?

Have seen videos of people hitting the hub bit with a hammer on each side to shock the joint.

Why do you want to remove the hub?.

Just undo the bolts holding the ball jointand whack the said sides and pop the joint out.

As above. 3 bolts holding it to the arm, and one through the hub, then whack away to shock it, or use a ball joint tool

Don't want to remove the hub, just the ball joint from it. Have just searched high and low and found my 'pickle fork' so should have a few options now. I didn't know if the shock tactic would work or not. Just a little aprehansive as attempted last week and sheared one of the three bolts so wanted to make sure I'm ready for most outcomes. Cheers  :drinking:

Where the ballpoint goes into the hub there is a slot in the back of the hub if it's really tight tap a chisel in there to open the gap slightly. Sometimes makes it easier

v4rley tappy knows his stuff and nearly all cars have a slot as the bolt tightens both sides to close and hold the ball joint in. in fact that looks like a vw hub  :signLOL:

Really @TAPPY does the ball joint just slide into the hub and bolt go through a hole and that's it.

I see it now lol just Google it and the ball joint slides up the hole and nut on top  :stupid: :signLOL:

again whack it once the nut is off. If the new ball joint spins whilst tightening it. use a jack to push the ball joint up and you should find it easier to do.

Thanks for your assistance, was even easier than expected! When undoing the top nut it backed against the driveshaft / cv joint and popped the ball joint down in the process  :pomppomp:

Have now successfully fitted this after sitting around for a year

Only casualty was my M6 triple square
