MFSW and fault code advice...
« on: June 08, 2016, 07:10:39 am »
Morning all!

So I've been trying to fit a MFSW to my manual 05 plate gti, with cruise control and highline.  Went through the process of fitting.  And after I got, on the dash, the ESP, the Steering wheel (yellow) and the Tyre monitor symbols.

Now, there has been a bit of a glitch with the install as unfortunately I was sent a mk6 airbag loom instead of a mk5, I didn't notice prior to fitting it.  After the install, the horn wasn't working which I thought odd.  The MFSW buttons were working and lighting up with the lights though, even though I hadn't been able to successfully insert a code for the control module. (Control module ending K which I believe is a highline module)

So yeh, I'm getting sent the mk5 airbag loom, and I'm hoping that will sort out the horn issue.

But I'm a bit stumped as to why I can't get rid of the tyre monitor symbol.  If I press the button in front of the gear stick the symbol goes off and on instantly.  I've tried pressing and holding the button and again the symbol just flashes off and on.  No beeping to say it's been reset? vcds can't communicate with the tyre monitor controller either?

The ESP button in front of the gear stick shows OFF, and pressing it does nothing. So can't get rid of the symbol on the dash?

I should say that I have full vcds and I can fully scan the car and clear codes etc...

The codes that are coming up for the steering wheel (yellow) symbol are the steering angle sensor and one about steering position or words to that effect.

I haven't been out to try the adaption etc that rosstech advise, only as I've spent my time trying to figure out what was going on with the airbag loom and horn.  When I get a chance I'll go through the steps from rosstech.  On this, would this be connected to the ESP and the tyre pressure monitor?

Any thoughts/questions fire away as I'm keen to get this sorted asap  :happy2: :driver: :driver:

Your horn not working will most certainly be related to the wrong loom.

Post up a scan of the faults as that will help peeps diagnose possible problems with coding etc

What is the part number for the steering wheel control module? Did you check you have the right slip ring part number also?

Sounds like you need to do the steering adaption to get rid of the dash symbol, i've had the wheel off mine several times and the adaption first time round was a PITA. Follow the ross tech guide and you'll be fine

Hey Buddy,

Good to see you on this forum too :D

The errors you have will be the normal ones that come up when a steering wheel is removed, you will need to perform basic settings in the ABS channel using vcds, login to the module using 40168, and then run basic settings on 66, 63 and 60. You have to log into the module before clearing each one. And then go for a drive. You will have to do the steering to the left and right and centre procedure as well

Should I be able to clear these fault codes using the old loom and before fitting the new airbag loom? Ie so this is done and the car is useable again?

Got the new loom fitted, thanks Raz! :happy2:

I've still got the tpms constantly flashing at me.  I've managed to do the adaption on the steering wheel and that has cleared the yellow steering wheel symbol.

And the coding for the airbag loom wouldn't accept 0003042, but would accept 0002042, where the 2 is for MFSW without cruise control and the 3 is with. I've got cruise and it's working.

So just leaves me with the flashing tpms.  I've tried doing the coding 40168, followed by the tpms from the drop down (which shows block 042, btw) and if I go in to measuring blocks TPMS III is the ones showing 'not enabled' and if a press and hold the button in front of the gear stick it goes solid on the dash and the 'not enabled' turns to 'enabled' until I let go of the button...

Any ideas folks!!!???

Cheers Raz,  I'll get to the bottom of the tpms, I'll start a new thread for that!
