Need some advice as to what MK5 GTI to buy!!

(1/2) > >>

jamki:
I've been toying with the idea of getting a MK5 GTI for a while now. I've got an old Yaris T-Sport that I want to part-ex towards one, so I'd be buying from a dealer. I'm based in London and I've found 2 potential candidates - my budget is £6k.

My criteria are manual, five door and a leather interior!

Candidate 1:
Silver with black alloys - I'm worried I'll curb them...
115k / FSH / Cambelt changed recently / Bonus(?/!): Comes with a 6 month warranty / £5k

Candidate 2:
Black with regular alloys
78k / FSH / £5.5k / Cambelt needs to be changed

So I've test driven candidate 2 and I love it - but having to get the cambelt replaced is going to eat into the budget, might try to barter them down. I haven't seen candidate 1 yet but wondering if the mileage is too much, but the "warranty" is attractive, I'd have to find out more information on that!

Candidate 2 trades in my car at £200 less as well...

Thoughts? Should the mileage put me off or is it not an issue? I can imagine that I'd keep this car for a very long time! :)

Welcome to the fold....nearly.

I'd be inclined towards candidate 2 as you are intending to keep it for a long time. The lower mileage is more attractive for that reason. Barter with the price as the cambelt needs changing.

Cheers for the response! I couldn't manage to barter down the price for the second one - the dealer was a bit weird. I asked him when the cambelt was last done and he said it hadn't been done and I said... well it needs to be done every 120k miles or 4 years and he dismissed that. So I won't be dealing with him.

I've had a look at another two.
- Black with Monza alloys, tinted windows, leather, rear parking sensors, xenons
100k / FSH / £5.5k / Cambelt changed last year

Surprisingly the Monza's are putting me off - I prefer the normal 17" alloys. It's got Pirelli's on the back and Yokohamas on the front. The previous owner had a sub in the boot (there are cables left behind) and there is a pioneer double din unit too. It drives really well and the bodywork is in in great condition.

- Black with regular 17s, cloth interior and that's about it.
100k / FSH with VW / £4.5k / Cambelt will be done now

The cloth interior didn't really do it for me, the lack of armrest made it feel like it had something missing. The rear badge had really bad whiteworm. But saving £1k (20%) is a big plus point. It drove well and the garage selling it was really good and reputable.

I'm not sure if the £1k are worth all the extras to me - something to think about!
