Stage 2 R-Tech Fuel cuts/limp mode?
« on: June 26, 2016, 06:17:28 pm »
Evening all.

Had the car mapped to Stage 2 a few weeks ago, 99% of the time it's spot on, smooth and strong.

On two occasions though, I've experienced what I'm guessing are fuel cuts or limp mode. First time it happened was in a high gear on the motorway, full throttle, and the car suddenly (but not too aggressively) loses full power, so full throttle holds the revs at say 3500rpm. It won't accelerate, but only slows if I come off the throttle. So it's reduced in power rather than losing all power. I dropped it down a gear, came off the throttle, sat in lane 1 so I could react better if things were about to go wrong, and within a few seconds full power was restored and off I went.

That was a couple of weeks ago, and it's been fine since, until it happened again today. Coming off a roundabout onto the bypass, in 3rd, quarter throttle, then full throttle as the road straightened. Started to boost, then went into slow mode. Again, after ten seconds or so full power was restored.

Spec of the car: k03 GTI, turbo back 3" Powervalve with 200 cell cat, Pipercross panel filter, had full service at Statller a couple of weeks before the Stage 2 map, codes read. Only code at the time was from the exhaust warning light that came up a while ago when I was running the full exhaust on the previous map, R-Tech Stage 1.

Niki mentioned after he'd done the Stage 2 map that standard HPFP was struggling in the midrange, so advised me to look at that as my next mod.

I'm assuming the new map is at times just asking a little too much of the standard pump, hence the fuel cuts. But that is just an assumption, I need to get it plugged in and see what fault codes have come up.

So, if there's anyone nearby (South Yorks/North Notts) that has VCDS/Vagcom or whatever it's called now (yes, I do need to invest in the kit) that's willing to have a look for a few quid, give me a shout.

I really started the thread with the hope of learning a bit about this rather than just leaving it all to the experts in ignorance, so if anyone has any advice or experience in this please chime in.

Cheers!

Nick has told you the answer,it needs a upgraded fuel pump fitting as it's struggling for fuel

Yeah, like I said this is my guess Andy. I just wanted to get an idea of how common this issue is on Stage 2 cars, if it could be something else like a dodgy fuel filter etc. I know the filters aren't even a servicable item in VWs eyes!

I just don't want to dismiss anything and get bitten on the arse.

Yeah definitely change the filter but looks like you will have to up grade the pump modding cars never seems to end :signLOL:

That's the thing isn't it, you upgrade the current bottleneck and then something else becomes the new one!

Long term plan is a hybrid or k04. Really need to sort a BBK... but if I get an uprated pump and stick that in on the current map it should run fine and eliminate the fuel cuts. Also change the fuel filter for peace of mind.

Then stockpile the other bits (Peron/Airtec, intake, turbo) get it all fitted, and just go straight from 2 to 3 with the map.

This is what's bugging me.

Anyone nearby who can get it plugged in?

You cheap sKate AJP  :slap: months on new and you still haven't got yourself a vagcom
Also how can you go stage two without an uprated hpfp
There's a loba in the sale section

Make KierenM an offer

An uprated pump isn't needed for a Stage 2 map. However, Stage 2+ does require one. I could understand getting fuel cuts running a 2+ map with a standard pump, but that's not the case here, I'm on a Stage 2 map with Stage 2 hardware.

I want to get an idea of how common it is to get fuel cuts at Stage 2. And if it's not at all common, would that point to it being a different issue.

Maybe you need to check your injectors as I had deka 630 on the TT  :P
I know the tfsi is a funny fecker when modding as I'll probably run into the same or similar issues if I ever get to where you are. I'm a little concerned as to why people are selling off there car mods so soon after fitting it all in and mapping the car or is there something people aren't telling us but that's another story

Also I've noticed stage two cars have a loba fitted frim all the reading I've done.

What plugs are you running?.

I think it's just a case of tolerances being tighter the further down the road you get with tuning. And like I said earlier, there will always be a new weak link even when you eliminate them along the way.

I wouldn't get put off the idea of going Stage 2 and beyond. There's plenty of knowledge on here as well as the specialists like R-Tech to make things easy. The TFSI isn't troublesome.

I just wasn't expecting full on limp mode when in theory the map is calibrated specifically for my hardware.

Anyway, it's just a guessing game until I get some logs done!

Plugs are Bosch oem, fitted at Statller with the major service a few weeks ago.

There may be people with Stage 2+ hardware (ie a Loba pump on top of the usual Stage 2 bits) and a Stage 2 map. I think different tuners may classify their map stages differently too. So one tuner's Stage 2 map might make the same fuel requests as another tuner's Stage 2+. With R-Tech at least, the '+' specifically denotes the requirement of an uprated pump.

Mine used to do the same thing, mapped to 330bhp by Rtech. Going WOT especially in higher gears the car would jolt pretty violently as it experienced fuel cuts and then would go into limp mode. Replaced HPFP with an autotech uprated one, new fuel filter etc but logged it and showed my LPFP was failing and couldn't keep up.
