Vent gauge pod
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:37:40 pm »
Has anyone used one of these: https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-car/volkswagen/golf-mk5/air-vent-gauge-pod-mk5-golf/

I don't seem to be having much luck in finding a review of one or even photographs of it installed.

Bit pricey I know; I bought the column pod from Awesome and was disappointed by it so it's going back.

Cheers  :drinking:

Looks the same pod that I am using. If you have a look at my build thread, on the last page there are a couple of photos of it fitted. Can take some more if you need them  :happy2:

Thanks for that, just what I needed. How close to oe is it would you say? Colour, finish, quality of plastic etc? Have they modified a VAG part?

Thanks again.  :happy2:

I have one of these also, bought from here though, slightly cheaper http://www.swgmotorsport.com/asps/ShowDetails.asp?id=190
IIRC they supply the part to Awesome, they are genunine parts modified for the gauge  :happy2:

Out of interest why would you run a single gauge like this when you can fit a polar FIS and display everything you can think of in the MFD (including a digital speed readout).

Polar FIS doesn't show oil pressure for one thing. This why I'm going to use one of these.
Analogue gauges work well because you can check you gauge without reading it.You know where there needle should be, you often don't need an absolute reading. Particularly useful while on track, as I am sometimes.

I have a Polar FIS module which I primarily bought so that I could see oil temperature. I happen to agree that if oil pressure were available through this device that it would be the preferred option.  :happy2:

SWG also made some rather nice wing mirrors for the mk4. Decent company.

A useful nugget of info regarding Awesome's part numbering;

'If it’s one of the ‘SWG’ part numbers, then yes, these are hand made modified original parts.
If it’s a ‘NEWSO’ part number, then it’s a patern part built to the same standards.'

I wasn't a fan of any of the vent gauges. So I just brought a single pod mount and stuck it by the A pillar.

I wired it up from the headlight switch. if you need any help with fitting it give me a shout :happy2:

I agree about the sweep of the needle is easier to quickly reference than the digital number readout. And yes, the only way to get oil pressure is with a mechanical gauge, what a pain that is. It's just that add on pods, of any type just look too added on for me and bit too fast and furious  :jumpmove:

A very fair observation, I agonized over this. Not sure I'm completely convinced but the usefulness of the information from the gauge is greater than my dislike of pods. I'd never add one for the sake of it but there seems to be little choice.

I had the vent pod with the Newsouth PSI gauge for years in my Eddy. A great piece of kit IMO and the pod was exactly the same in look as the OEM vents in colour/look etc.

Dodgy pic of mine......

I'm feeling encouraged, some good looking installations!
