RCD300 to RCD510
« on: July 04, 2016, 11:07:00 am »
I'm getting very confused reading multiple threads about the retrofitting of the RCD510 unit, so I thought I'd create a new topic to see if I can get some answers to the parts I don't understand.

The plan is to fit a RCD510 DAB unit that allows me to play music from my phone via usb whilst charging the phone. I like the idea of an OEM looking usb port which is why I want to fit one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Switch-Socket-Cable-For-OEM-VW-GOLF-JETTA-MK5-MK6-SCIROCCO-RCD510-RNS315-/252407154098?hash=item3ac4a385b2:g:RVAAAOSwa81XSRWZ

Can the above usb port do the things i'm after, allow me to play music through my phone (Spotify, iTunes music etc) and charge the phone at the same time?
I'd assume the usb port is a simple installation once the RCD510 is in place, but please correct me if I'm wrong!?

I've been reading that with the DAB RCD510 i would need to install a DAB ariel, such as the sharkfin? Is this a simple installation or do I need more parts than i think!?

My car is an 06 GTI, so I'm assuming I'll need a new can gateway to resolve the battery drain issue that would occur with the RCD510 unit, correct?

 :happy2:

EDIT: I also have the 6CD changer installed. Not really to bothered about using it though as I'll be using my phone and the radio mostly.

so, can't answer all your first question on the ebay usb socket thing but you should be able to play music through it. Unknown if it'll provide power or if you can control through the head unit.

Can Bus: You will need a 7n0 can gateway to prevent battery drain if you are putting in either the RCD or RNS head units. Mine is a 56 plate GTI and needed it replacing so i would assume yours is the same. Eddie-NL provided me a pre-coded can bus which i installed myself.

DAB aerial: I used a windscreen one when i installed my RCD510 DAB. This i got from Halfords for not a lot. My plan was to see if the reception was any good and take it from there. If you do get one of these make sure you install it in the right place (not like me!) and have it on the passenger side slightly above where the tax disk would normally go.

Hope this helps.

re your changer, you wont need it, as the RCD510 has a built in 6cd changer

would this be the stick on film type, internal,  one that I saw in Halfords for £15 ish?
Any good/ It looks pretty flimsy?

I was hard to imagine where you might fit the "miniaturised" mag mount alternative that they were offering?

Any recommendations please?
