Extend Warranty??
« on: July 04, 2016, 09:31:08 am »
My car just coming to the end of the 3 month warranty, and they are offering to extend for 12 months at £230. Deal is they pay half of any eligible claim, less a £75 excess. My car is 2005 and done 34,000 miles, and I do less than 5,000 miles a year.

My assessment is that it would be useful if something really major went, but for anything around £400-£500 ish, I'd be better putting the £300 insurance cost (policy plus excess) towards the cost of the repair, if required. The difficulty is, of course, not being able to foresee what is going to happen. I don't drive the car hard, just the odd blast.

Any thoughts welcome, please

If it helps, I bought the VW extended warranty (the one all dealerships sell) and it was £320 a year, with no excess. Simply drive into the dealer and away they go. Mileage at the time was around 75k.

I got it slightly cheaper via the dealer as I purchased it when I bought the car (on top of the standard used one they give you). However, when I was looking at GTis from other garages, https://www.volkswagenextendedwarranty.co.uk/ quoted around £350-370.

Might be worth popping into a dealer and asking?

Update...
Another option they have given me is £269, with 100% parts and labour covered (not just 50%, as before), still with £75 excess, but including MOT failure cover on items included in warranty (ie not tyres and stuff like consumables).

Waiting to hear from VW, but suspect car is too old now. 15 mins on hold with VW customer services :rolleye:
Finally......£507, no excess, but car must have been serviced exactly in accordance with the VW schedule......and we know how many contradictions we've read about that on here.

Views, please? Am I better just to put the money aside towards a future repair????

As your car is so low mileage I'd just put the money towards any future repair. These warranties always seem to have so many clauses as to what they'll pay out out on that there not usually worth the paper they're written on.

Here's the VW wording and parts covered, pretty comprehensive!
