Cam follower on my 06' plate
« on: June 10, 2016, 04:14:54 pm »
All,

As above I want to change the follower on my '06 gti. Easy enough i hope. Seen a few vids, feel comfortable with this.
But i just remembered none of the vids show for a banjo type pump.

Would more then likely my 06 have the banjo fitting?, if it does what is it and how do i overcome it to do my follower :s Any all info appreciated as would like to do today as dv did yesterday.

Was so close to jumping into this. Glad I didn't just yet

Mines an '06 and it had the banjo bolt. You'll need the correct triple square bit to get it out and yes it is a pain to do, just be patient and take your time.  :happy2:

The banjo bolt is the bolt on the left with the metal pipe connected, disconnect air intake and sensor plug top left of engine cover, pull engine cover from each corner to release the bungs (needs a good tug) disconnect fuel pump plug, stuff a rag in underneath and slowly undo the right hand pipe first and release pressure. Then you will need a m8 triple square to undo u the left banjo belt from underneath ( this is a pain so be patient and make sure socket is in properly so you don't strip it, and mine took some doing up after to stop it weeping ) disconnecting the pipe fom the pcv helps a lot. The rest is easy 3  bolts to take the pump off ( don't over tighten them when you put it back

Also make sure you don't cross thread the large nut that holds the fuel line onto the pump.

Thanks guys for all the help.
Maybe i needed the kick up the butt to get on with it, maybe the guidance was all i needed.

Managed to get the pump of and change the lil tappet. Not difficult, just long. They so much smaller in real life. My worn one below.

Theres hardly any space to swing your ratchet so the banjo had to be done 1 click a time. Didn't care as no damage was caused and it worked. Shame about the two buckets of sweat i lost

My cars a BWA, so why does it have a banjo? Is there other things i could have different to other bwa?

As always all comments welcome. Everything is fixable if you know what part to fix.

Thanks Rich,

But... How do i do that?

Do i take the cam cover off to check the peaks? In which case I'd do an investigatory rout around inside the cam cover , put it back together as is and order parts to replace chain and possible cam lobe & shaft?

Also what would be considered excessive wear on the lobe?

R

The follower is weird, i almost feel like its a fingerprint of different owners. No prizes for guessing me.

But the wear marks really are distinctively different. The most central one is so well grouped and was there for so long started to rust.

I think the next owner moved this wear to to the larger 'black' circle, no rust.

As you can still see the white marks of the coating on the outer wear marks id guess id have to hold my hands up to that.
