Perspective ED30 Owner With a question
« on: July 12, 2016, 08:50:48 pm »
Hi everyone,

I am currently looking at ED30s, and have just been to visit one today. YD07VSZ, if anyone is familar with it.

I'm not used to turbo cars; how much should I hear the turbo?  It was very obvious, with a notable rush when driving hard and changing gear - it doesn't do this when driving steadily. I'm looking to get a standard car, so if it's been modded or mapped I'm not interested, but I just don't know how it's supposed to sound.  Also if it's broken - I have no idea!

Is there anything in particular I should be looking at elsewhere?

Sounds like the diverter valve may be gone or the turbo knacked? does it lack that typical turbo boost when you can hear it kicking in?? any black smoke?

The turbos aren't generally that noisy, so something may be amiss.

On the Eddys, it is very easy to check the diverter valve, it is at the front of the engine just behind the rad on the RHS, 3 bolts and it's out!!
It may well be the diaphragm torn, and this is easy to see once taken out.
Google it, many photos of torn/damaged ones, and how simple/cheap it is to replace.

Slightly more difficult on a standard Gti, as it is under the car!!

It's worth trying a couple of different cars when our after something new.

whenever I'm after a car I'm not familiar with. I usually find the mintiest, lowest mileage one for sale in the trade (not private) and go have a look and drive. Gives you a point of comparison to judge other cars by.
