Engine Swap 1.4 to 2.0

Alright guys, new to the forum, i'll get some pics of my car posted at some point..

My post is in relation to my Golf. She looks beautiful and sounds perfect with her R32 rear end fitted, but unfortunately only has a wee 1.4 under the bonnet.

How much roughly do you think it would cost to buy a new engine from a GTI and fit it?

I know it wont be cheap, and i'll likely have to upgrade the clutch and gearbox aswell.. any help is appreciated!

You got to think is it worth all the hassle? you will need to upgrade the brakes and suspension to deal with the power hike. It would make more sense to start with the gti in the first place. Probably not what you wanted to hear! but that's just my 2p

It goes so far beyond the obvious parts that you'd think you need to replace. Even if you could drop in a TFSI (sounds simple doesn't it), bolt on some bigger brakes, and off you go, it'd still be a lesson in false economy.

I know it's not the answer you wanted, but it's just the way it is.

And big power isn't the be all and end all. Either accept you've got a 1.4 and strip it bare by 200kg, polybush it, change the final drive, ohlins suspension, nqsbbk, semi slicks etc...

Or stop in your tracks, sell up, and buy something else.

Funny thing about this, as much as it's true, is that it still applies to cars you buy that are already fast, if you've got the bug. I'm at Stage 2. Is it fast enough? No way. Bigger turbo next. Will I get desensitised to the bigger turbo and then want more and more? Definitely! It's all relative.

So, without babbling on too much, try and love what you've got. There will always be a car with 100 more horses. Trick is knowing when to stop pining for it.

Plenty good advice there - even if you had the bits the job isn't for the faint of heart - sell and buy a GTI.

Buy a GTI first, swap the rear bumpers over so you can keep the better looking R32 rear and start from there. In theory it's possible to do but given the choice of engine/chassis swapping or swapping a rear bumper, I know what I'd pick.

Sage advice up there buddy. I've heard the saying "never try to make something you can buy". So the 2.0 tfsi can easily be found in the wealth of GTI's out there. If you were proposing a RS4 V8 into an R32 chassis then that's a different matter. There are so many additional factors/ parts to consider, engine and gearbox are just the tip of the iceberg....the seats, steering wheel, brakes, m/c, ecu, harness, fuel pumps etc, the list will be quite long, plus your insurance company will baulk at how much you have to alter. On the other hand, if you're a wizz with spanners and can get the bits for next to nowt then crack on.
It's not folk knocking your enthusiasm, it's the hassle and expertise required to pull off conversions well.

Not to mention the insurance implications. You would probably find it would cost much more to insure than an equivalent GTI. Sell up and get a GTI mate.

Really not worth the hassle to be honest, probably cost as much as a GTI in the first place. Buy a GTI and save yourself the stress and headaches. Just my opinion.

Again sell it as it's not worth the headache and money you'll pour in to it. buy a gti ed 30 whichever you can afford

I guess the calculated decision is to buy a GTI and not do an engine swap. So I agree with my predecessors.
But there are people for whom the car is more than just transportation and if they are like me, wouldn't sell their car. So, for people like myself it's either we enjoy our 1.4 or we have a swap 

In order to have a constructive post I would say the ideal situation is to find a totaled GTI Ed 30 with the engine bay still intact.
Than, the parts needed would be:
- whole engine bay: engine, gear box, FMIC, battery, air filter, ECU etc
- exhaust
- if you have a 122+ bhp 1.4 engine than the wheel hubs are identical so if you already have a coilover set it would not need to be changed. If you have a stock configuration for the 1.4 than the GTI's springs and dampers should be used to accommodate the heavier engine.
If your 1.4 is below 122 bhp you are going to need the GTI front suspension + hub.
