K03 to k04
« on: July 28, 2016, 04:01:53 pm »
Hi guys

My wastgate exuator rod is broken on my k03 turbine and I'm going to upgrade to k04. Just to be sure. The k04 is a straight fit on to my engine. I have 2006 gti. And what injectors do I need, if I have to swap them.

Thanks

You need more than just the turbo. This is quite comprehensive:

You'll be better with injectors off a k04 car, so an 8P S3, mk6 R, etc. You could in theory use your k03 injectors, but you won't get full power potential, and any generic k04 conversion map will be for a car with k04 injectors.

You'll definitely need a remap, as soon after the conversion as possible. Running a k04 on a k03 map isn't a great idea.

I'd imagine most generic k04 conversion maps are classed as Stage 3, so they're designed with all the usual Stage 2+ hardware in mind as well as the turbo.

If you don't / won't have all those extra hardware upgrades, and you're essentially turning your car into a Stage 1 Edition 30, you'll want a custom map from the likes of R-Tech or Unicorn.

Some early GTIs are not suitable for a straight turbo swap. AXXs for example need a lot more work, but I'm not sure what work that is. Make sure you know what you need before you dive in.

Really? I haven't heard that before. The AXX and BWA really aren't a million miles apart. Marginally higher compression on the AXX.

They don't need any additional work. They're basically exactly the same bar a few little internal tweaks.

I'm starting to wonder whether there'll still be any low mileage k04s around when I eventually get round to doing mine..

They're all IHI on the mk7 chassis now I think.

Or go K03 hybrid. Only need to change the turbo (not injectors etc) and you get a safe 360bhp on an awesome curve and better spool than even a K04

Pretty sure Beach Buggy turbos do it for around £600-800
NOW: 2015 Golf R DSG 5 Door, Lapiz Blue, 19s, Discover Nav, Reversing Camera
GONE:2007 Black GTI Edition 30 3dr

Yeah, it's still as much of an option as a k04. Think the BBT hybrids are closer to a grand though? Either way, still an option.

If BBT pulled their finger out and got the new website up I could spend hours on it researching (drooling over) the shiny new turbos...!

Here's a recent graph of a BBT k03 hybrid with R-Tech map for those interested. It's damn impressive.

Ok I picked up a original k04 from ed30 and I have BWA engine. If I'm understanding this right I should be able to bolt on the turbo without anything else. Right? I just have to change the diverter valve relocation wich are just some silicone hoses I think.
And I'm going to run on stock injectors to start with. But the car will be custum remapped straight after the swap.
