MFSW, what do i need to know??
« on: January 19, 2010, 04:50:56 pm »
Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of buying a MFSW for my GTI.  Its a 2005 with the version B RNS-510 sat nav.  If i buy one, how easy is it to fit and do i need any new wiring?

I'd appreciate some knowledge from those who are in the know as I've had a bit of a search around the forums but need some concise facts.

Cheers,

Ryan

Fitting should be a doddle.

Airbag wiring loom should be the only wiring you need.

Might need a new steering controller depending on what's currently installed.

Thanks for the reply. What's involved in changing the steering controller and what kind of
cost is the part. Also, does the mfsw need coding before the buttons
will work?

Cheers

You need the steering wheel off to get to the Control box, and a bit of coding might be expected  :happy2:

Over the top mod list ;o)

Steering wheel controllers are circa £100 - £115.

Do you have CC or Highline at the moment?

I have cruise control but not the highline computer.  I had the cruise retrofitted at a vw dealer soon after i purchased the car

It's not a 100% infallible supposition but in many cases if you have CC and or Highline you have a good chance of having the correct steering controller for MFSW.

I remember the dealer had to order a cable as the cruise wasnt plug and play on my gti as it is one of the earlier models?  Don't know if they were refering to the steering controller?

Thanks for the replies :happy2:

I guess yours is earlier than mid 2005 ish then.  The wire runs from the steering controller to the bulkhead panel.

June 2005 mate.  So this wire is nothing to do with the steering controller then?

I can't stop finding new things to buy for this car :scared:

It connects the CC stalk to the ECU via the steering controller.
