Mk5 Tdi 1.9 Air compressor

Hi there,

This is my first post do don't hate me if its in the wrong area!

I recently bought a 2005 1.9 Tdi, really good car it seems.

I have fixed a few niggles that had come with it, minor ones. However I went to get the air con re-gassed, and was informed the compressor is not operating. It could be a fuse, relay or the unit itself and would need further investigating.

I have read that compressor failure is a common issue with these vehicles. However I also read that the solenoid switch for the compressor can also be to blame sometimes.
I dont have 500+ quid to get a new replacement one. But I have seen second hand 'functioning' ones on ebay etc. for between £40-80.

Is there an easy way for me to diagnose what exactly is wrong with the system?
Is there a way to easilt check if it is the solenoid switch thing, or to know if its the compressor itself,
and lastly, is it worth me just buying a second hand compressor and trying to change it myself to save all that money and hassle?

I need the ac realy as it steams up in this sillly british weather !

Kind Regards,
