Should I get an edition 30?
« on: August 06, 2016, 09:37:47 am »
Hi guys, bit of a random post here but I'd quite like your opinions. I have been saving up for an ed 30 for quite sometime as its a car I have wanted for a very long time. Saying that I've just started a job that provides a company car. Most people have expressed their opinions saying that it's stupid to get a new car when you have a company car but I'd quite like your opinions to make sure that I wouldn't be being an idiot by buying one since no company car they will provide will come anywhere near to the thrills I feel an ed 30 will provide.

whilst the lure of a company car is good it cost a fortune in tax.

Will they give you a car allowance? some companies offer cash or car. I take the cash personally and have my own cars. yeah you have to pay for servicing etc but you get what you want and i think, on balance is more cost effective (unless you start modding of course).

Could always just use the eddy as a weekend car? Would keep the miles down too. Although they are nearly double the price of a normal gti so might be better saving a few thousand and just modding a few bits to a normal gti.

Or on this note, could you get something a bit more hardcore than an ed30 for the weekends? The GTI/ed30 is a great car partly because it's a great all round car.

If you got a company car you'd no longer need an all-rounder. Maybe you could pick up a proper toy for the weekends, something light, rwd, that you wouldn't have to worry about putting miles on.

I'm more with the tone of your original post.....seems like unnecessary expense to me, to be taxing and insuring a weekend toy, aside from the initial purchase. Unless you're well minted, I'd save your money, or invest it in something that might bring a return. My old head on....The money I've lost on cars over the years....... I sound a bit like my dad when we went to view a well knackered TR6, when I was a young un. So glad I didn't buy it, even though I didn't think so at the time, ha ha (I did get one a bit later - and it was a much better buy).

A Classic car might be a different prospect - look how the Mercedes SL's have rocketed up (had a 350 SL in 1988 - £8k then 6 years old!)  E46 M3's are are the way up now too, if you buy a low miler; etc - do a bit of research

All my opinion - keep us informed, be interesting to see what you do

I don't know your circumstances, but if you've got the room to park both cars easily & you won't regret spending the money, then me as a petrolhead would encourage you to have a weekend car. As said, the ED30 is great, but I think I might have something more hard-core if I was given a company car tomorrow. I'd still want my 'own' car for the exact reasons you mention (i.e., a company car being completely unexciting...).
I'd have an Elise (or Exige ideally) / Honda S2000 - my realistic non lottery win car. Both are pretty much depreciation proof now - in fact I've read that S2000's are starting to appreciate! Of course, they might not take your fancy so a German offering is the E46 M3;  have read these are in demand now too.

Enjoy... it's a good dilemma to have!

As said the Ed30 is a allrounder, a great one car choice, but maybe a bit sensible for weekend fun. Put the miles on the repmobile and get something bonkers for when you feel like it? My Ed30 stops me getting the bonkers machine because for me they would be too close to justify both. The ed30 is great everyday but it's not an elise, but would an elise so trounce the ed30 driving wise to make sense? A diesel plodder v elise for the weekend? No brainer

What Dave said, If I had a Daily driver/Company car an ED30 would not be on the list for a Weekend toy. It would be something that scared me and was totally impractical.

That said for a Daily Driver an ED30 is a excellent all rounder.

I have a company car and I also run a Pirelli Golf, I love my Golf and as you stated NO company provided car will give the enjoyment of not just driving but owning a "special" car.

I sold my Honda S2000 to get my Pirelli and have never regretted a single moment, being over six foot  I never felt comfortable in the Honda (no seat or steering wheel adjustment).

Toys are great and as mentioned a Lotus etc would be great, if I didn't have the responsibility of a young family I would be back on a super bike, say a BMW S1000RR..

Thanks for all the comments guys i really appreciate your comments. I understand where your coming from about getting something a little crazier but I've had my heart set on a Ed30 for years and since my previous car was 75bhp Polo I'm sure im going to love it especially if i go down the remap route. And yes my company car is currently a hyundai ix20 so quite boring to say the least.

Im actually viewing one tomorrow at a garage and forgive me if i should have started another thread but I'd like your opinions on how much i should pay for it. Its a 2007 Ed30, DSG with 29000 miles currently up for sale for £12000 which looks in great condition (from the photos). Any help would be appreciated!

There are comments on that one (it's actually 32000 miles, not 29000). I will find the link and add it.

If you had already made your mind up, then  I don't see why you bothered wasting time asking for people's opinions.....Yawn!  Just get on with it

Buy a 748 ducati with termi's instead. Appreciating bike and handles ok, sounds epic.
