The million pound Edition 30... (Corrosion warranty win!)
« on: August 13, 2016, 06:27:08 pm »
Afternoon folks.

Haven't posted much on here but I thought I'd fire up a thread regarding my experience with the rust on my Mk5 GTi Edition 30 in Tornado Red.

I've had the car since January 2014. Its been fairly faultless in that time, ABS sensor aside, its been faultless.

Anyway, I wash the car religiously every week and I started noticing slight bubbles forming around the rear quarter panels/sills/front wings/rear bootlid (although I'm aware the front wings are a recall as it stands anyway) so I took it to Crow Road Glasgow VW to chin them regarding the corrosion warranty and where I stood etc. The guy in short was not one bit interested his words were; "We're not into the business of painting 9 year old cars" I replied well I'm not into the business of buying 9 year old cars melting with rust ffs, anyway... This was September last year.

I phoned VW UK telling them of the grief I was having with it and after me telling them I'd be asking citizens advice bureau for assistance, they told me to take it to their Linwood dealership in Paisley to see if they could offer good will towards it. This was the best thing I could have done, the assessor was absolutely spot on and couldn't have been more sympathetic with how bad the paint work was. So they agreed to paint the entire car bar the roof and bonnet and front bumper as they were literally the only areas without corrosion, jackpot! They also painted the front bumper without me even asking free of charge as the paint was already matched up!

So, as it stands, they're painting the entire car for £325 (roof and bonnet I'm paying for)

They actually replaced the 3/4 panel on the off side as apparently it was so badly pitted they couldn't repair it, so they replaced it, at f*ck knows what cost!

So naturally I went down to see it today as they've had it for 5 weeks, I'm not complaining as I've got my Clio 172 to run around in in the meantime...

I believe their contribution to the work is currently at around £4300 lol. The car should be built back up by Wednesday so i'll get it updated as and when. I was planning on selling it, but the amount of work that's went into the body work means by the time I get the wheels done and tyres sorted, it'll be one of the best about. Its currently Stage 1, I haven't ruled out taking it to stage 2+. Thanks for reading guys!

I'll get more pictures on Monday, it's going to look smashing when its all done!

Result.  I have a couple bits needing seen to on mine, so I'm poping into Camerons in Perth to see if they will help.

If not, might go try Paisley.  Don't mind travelling for that amount of work.

There was me happy as a pig with just having my front wings done free of charge and you have practically got away with them respraying your whole car for pennies!

I live in dumbarton with a tornado red ed30 and i had similar problems maybe not as bad. But i didn't bother even phoning them cause i thought next to no chance. And its been in and painted by rm bodyshop in east kilbride. Wish i phoned linwood now as its the nearest vw to me.

Good result though m8. Stage 2+ is well worth it. Rtech is a treck but worth it.

Good place in greenock that do revo if your not in to a 6hour journey lol. https://m.facebook.com/AutoTecPerformance/

F****** lucky mate. congrats really pleased you've had success :happy2:
When I take a week off I'm taking mine back to VW and telling them about the bubbling rear quarter and boot lid.they wouldn't paint the front wings as these have been painted previously not by my ownership. Hoping they will sort the rear and boot lid out.

Great result in the end but how can they the first garage have such a shocking attitude "we're not in the business of painting 9 year old cars"

Well if there is a 12 corrosion warranty then they certainly should be interested!

really gets me that there is the 12 year corrosion warranty but half the time VW don't even want to know.

Thanks lads! I cannot believe the work that's went into it, its been properly prepared hence why it has taken so long for them to complete!

Just looking forward to getting the wheels done and it'll look fantastic!

Wow. That's one good turn of events! 300 odd quid for pretty much a full respray?!

Interestingly, when I got my front wings done at Hillsborough Seat (JCT600) I was told it was a 'goodwill' offering rather than warranty work. Not sure what difference it makes, as they were very helpful and did a good job, and ultimately my wings are now sorted free of charge.

Have you thought about getting the paint protected once it's done? It'd make sense to keep the paintwork fresh for as long as possible. There's Gtechniq, but I don't think it's cheap. At the very least, get a good quality wax on it by hand.

Bet you can't wait to get it back!

Thanks pal! I may be mislead but from reading online, I thought it was best not to wax/detail fresh paint for a few months to allow it to breath/cure properly?

Hmmm, you might be right there, that rings a bell. I'd imagine that if the paint is really fresh and still needs some time to harden, you could end up going a bit far if you used a polish that was slightly abrasive - such as Autoglym SRP. But, assuming the paint has properly hardened before you pick it up I think a wax rather than a polish would be fine.

Maybe check with the bodyshop when you pick it up, see what they advise.

in the old days maybe so. most paint is water based now days ive talked to several body shops about it.  dont forget they woulda already polished it anyway as part of the process.  just dont use anything aggressive

Just remember that polish takes a layer off and wax puts a layer on.

After you get it back from paint you don't want to be taking anything off, just put a few coats of decent wax on it and admire

Hi mate,

Did you have to have full VW service history to get the warranty?

Also do you have any pics of where the corrosion/rust/bubbling takes place?

Cheers
