Rattly pinging Idle ???
« on: August 19, 2016, 02:51:28 pm »
AXX 2005 GTI, 100k, When idling theres a stange noise (rattling) coming from the engine bay, sounds top end and to the right hand side if your looking at the front of the car. when driving the car still pulls like a train and noise is not present but when you stop at traffic lights etc you can hear it again, only seems to come when the engine gets warmer, its starting to make me not enjoy owning the car as it has me waiting for it too blow up lol, anyone else have this type of sound and has anyone sussed what the noise is or if its nothing to worry about..

had timing belt changed about 6/7k miles ago along with Oil change, and was serviced 3 days ago, getting a full oil change (with Lucas oil stabiliser added), Oil filter, Fuel filter and x4 bosch spark plugs.

Any response would be appreciated, cheers.

It could be your cam chain or noisy injectors. Would you say it has a diesel like sound during idle when hot? That's usually the main symptom of the cam chain.

Very very common,  its probably just the cam chain tensioner that is worn (yes they have both a cam belt and cam chain at the right hand end)

£500 job unfortunately.

Mines been like it more than a year

Yeah people have told me it sounds like a diesel, i was hoping that it was a normal sound, its been annoying me for quite a while now!

From what I've read it's not going to cause engine failure,  if it does it from cold then that's something worse....

I'm on my 2nd MK5 GTI now both AXX 2005 models (one 90K and other 110k) and guess what they both sounded the same at idle.

If anything I would say my current (lower mileage) one sounds more pingy but less diesely than the higher mileage one if that makes sense.

I have never had any issues with either so unless it gets any worse or I go down the route of tuning to a high level I'm just going to leave it.

Changing your oil more regularly (every 5K) with a decent brand will help prolong any further wear plus changing your cam follower won't do any harm either.
