New Brakes - Completely Standard Car
« on: August 25, 2016, 10:28:54 am »
I know this issue gets covered a lot, however after going through 20 pages of posts last night I didn't really find anything relevant to me.  Most people were looking at upgrades for stage 1 or 2, or looking for an R32 set up.

I have a completely standard 2006 GTi.  I am going to replace the discs and pads all round myself soon.  I don't want to upgrade to a R32 setup of change hoses etc, just the discs and pads.  What would other forum members recommend?

I read through a few pages discussing some pads that people thought were decent, however it then turned into a bit of an argument about being road legal.  My car is used for getting from A to B only, no track days etc.

Am I as well just getting standard new parts from TPS or Euro Car Parts, or can anyone advise of a better performing set up that wont break the bank.

As always, thanks in advance.   :happy2:

You could call up VW parts and ask for the name of the current recommended setup and the save a few pound by buying them online!

I'm like you with a completely standard car and didn't want to get a new setup so I opted for jurid pads.... Possibly same discs but can't recall.

I am in exactly the same boat as you... both my fronts need doing and its a standard 312mm with original caliper's on a 2007 Eddy. I read and read all the possible solutions for NSBBK and 2 pot brembo's, R32 S3 calipers etc etc. I came to the conclusion that without a stage 1 or track days for now I just wanted to sort out the originals. For everyday driving they wouldn't be that bad. I really didn't want to spend out that much either so it looks like about 100 quid for discs and about 70 quid for pads. I admit I am tempted by large discs and calipers but I dont think its necessary at the moment. So for me its making the best of what we have for now. Perhaps I will change my mind once I get a stage 1  :signLOL:

I was basically looking at either some Brembo 312mm for the front and some Brembo or Pagid pads. Apparently the Brembo's have slightly better anti corrosion metal make up's. I think Eurocarparts had the best source. Its a pretty easy thing to do so just trying to find the time at the moment.

Cheers

Seems like a lot of people are in or have been in the same boat, so hopefully this thread will be of use to other people in the future.

A set of Pagid discs and pads all round with current eurocarparts discount is about £180.

I fitted these to my old Mk4 gti - no problems from me.  I don't track day or drive like a loon.

I have also used 'standard' mintex pads, which again were fine.

Also, I know that VW do economy pads now, which are  cheaper, they also do a lifetime free replacent of pads.

If you are sticking with OEM 312MM then I would either go for Genuine from TPS or aftermarket Brembo Plain Discs, Brembo Pads, Decent Brake Fluid.

I have had problems with Pagid Discs warping on various cars in the past so avoid buying them nowadays.

I would avoid brembo pads they tend to fall to bits.

Think its looking so far that it will just be a completely standard setup from TPS or similar.

Never heard of this, Not disagreeing with you though! Can happen with any pads.

Brembo have been faultless on my Civic Type R!

A friend who has his own Garage/Workshop has fitted about 20 sets of Discs and Pads on customers cars this Year, All Brembo. Not One has returned with any issues.

The reason I know this is because when I used to be in the Motor Trade as a Manager we used to fit a lot of Pagid products but had a string of cars coming back within a few Months with customers complaining of vibration under braking. So we switched to Brembo, No more issues.

More recently over the past Year, A friend who has been a Motor Vehicle Technician for 30 Years actually had a representative come to his premises from ECP on behalf of Pagid as they insisted that the product was not at fault and suggested it was in fact incorrect fitment of the parts by my friend.

My friend also began using Brembo products which ECP also supply and so questions where raised when he rejected any Pagid products that where offered to him on the phone (Probably because the sales team get decent commission on Pagid products at ECP)

To cut a long story short he was told that Pagid had in fact changed the Metallic properties used in the manufacturing process on their range of Brake Pads which they felt could be contributing towards the transfer of the Pad Compound onto the Discs and allowing a build up which could cause a vibration under braking over time and NOT any fault on my friends fitment.

People tend to go off their own experiences, If you have had a bad experience with Brembo then you are probably less likely to try them again. I however feel the same about Pagid, Brembo products are working well for me on my own car and my friends business also.

To be honest, if you are fitting news discs, pads and fluid, what ever you fit will be better than the tired existing setup :happy2:

^lol. Picture says a thousand words.

I fitted brembo discs and pads all round last year, just from GSF.

I'm happy with them so far except that the rear disc 'bells' arent painted so they look like rusty sh*t. I wouldn't have noticed really except for that the fronts were painted? I'm sure you can get rears that are painted too but you'd have to check. Just something to think about.

@rich83, Wasn't disagreeing with you. Seen it many times before on other brands! Looks like a bad One that though!

@horsemeat, Paint them yourself? I always pint the bells anyway as even the discs you buy that are coated from the factory deteriorate over time.
