loud noise at 30mph plus
« on: August 27, 2016, 04:53:09 pm »
Hi all, i previously posted about a loud noise when I'm driving which i attributed to my roof bars and bike racks. however, having been trying to trouble shoot and remove bars and racks etc 1 at a time, i have discovered the noise is not even the racks at all! it sounds like wind noise or vibration maybe as the speed picks up from 30 onwards. at 60 its horrible but eases at 70 or when breaking down towards 50mph. the steering wheel isn't vibrating or anything........

any ideas?

Have you had your wheels aligned and balanced?

Do you have a sunroof? If so, you get terrible turbulence with the mk5. It took me a while to realise what it was!

Could it be the engine undertray that's come loose and is flapping about at higher speed? I've seen this on a few mk5's when on the motorway

thanks for these suggestions..... I'm going through them slowly. new tyres (required anyway) and balanced etc and its still going on.

no sunroof. Window seal was actually tucked in a tiny amount in a couple of places but again the noise continued. Have looked underneath and nothing hanging down, but ill have a closer inspection.

The rear passenger wheel bearing is making noise however and i think this may be the cause..... fingers crossed!

thanks again all, i'll let you know.................

A wheel bearing on it's way out will make a horrible noise!!

And in my experience can sound quite like wind turbulence. I had exactly this problem on my old Clio 182.

I'd be suspicious that the bearing is the source of your problem :happy2:
