Magnetic plate mod help
« on: September 13, 2016, 08:43:43 am »
I'm trying to get the bits together to do the magnetic front plate mod.

Do I need the 2nd sheet of metal to bond to my pressed aluminium plate?

Also, what's the best product to weather proof the rear of the plate/magnets and to stop it from scratching the grille?

Thanks

I recently did this, i bought neoprene sponge sheet, i used 3mm thick

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4712.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=252533358420&_sacat=0

These magnets, nice and strong, i used 6 on each

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lots-Super-strong-Disc-Magnets-20mm-x-5mm-Rare-Earth-Neodymium-N35-Craft-Models-/151438032755?var=&hash=item234268ff73:m:m3GB62oT5wd5aOO9cyrYDsw

And i finished it with this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sticky-Back-Self-Adhesive-Acrylic-Felt-Fabric-18-Square-FFELT18-AD-M-/371524980928?var=&hash=item56809d50c0:m:m0ebPM9STtBKWduH8GIFFJA

I then waterproofed the felt material with some tent/canopy waterproof spray from Halfords. I didn't use the extra alu sheet, didn't see the need for it. I trust your following "Topcats" guide on here?

Someone's guide on here, not sure who!

It said something about getting dark marks on the plate from the magnets, without the 2nd sheet?

Thanks for the links  :happy2: Aren't the sponge and the felt doing similar things though? i.e. could you not just get one or the other?

The sponge is filling the recess in the plate, the felt then is what is stopping the magnets from marking the mask.

I think Tom, aka topcat was saying that his first version was without the felt layer and it was magnet straight onto the mask that was causing the marking.

Mine works perfectly, very happy with how it went  :happy2:
