They can sound like diesels when cold.
Its to do with the direct injection like diesels do.

They can sound really sh*te when warm as well.

Unfortunately the TFSI lump is not a musical one.

I have a consistent ticking noise for the first 5 or 10 seconds in my car, coming from the front of the passenger side interior somewhere.

It cant be heard from outside with the bonnet open though.

Its fairly quiet, but its just a bit random.

Same here... (08 model)  Sounds like something setting itself..

Is that once the car has started? Likely to be the air conditioning ducts moving.

Or it it like a wirring and ticking sound when you put the key to the last pre-ignition point? Thats the throttle body aligning.

took mine in yesterday guy sadi nothing sounded wrong just noisy but as its 5yrs old ive decided to get the cambelt kit done which will include the tensioner-he reckons that will solve the "noise" i,m hearing.
mine is just on tickover cold or warm but not when the revs rise!
hope that helps

Great news, thanks very much. Im used to having the worst luck in the world with these sort of things, so immediately expected a bill of several thousand £ to fix  :happy2:

I turned the radio off this morning and listened to see if it did it with just the ignition on, before turning the car on. And sure enough it did.

Actually, come to think about it, you can hear the AC ducts moving both when the car is started and when on the last pre-ignition point! Becomes annoying sometimes haha! Some people did have more movement than others and I think one of the controller units were replaced under warranty by the dealer. My ducts click loads, but the whole system seems to work fine.

In terms of the actual engine as other have said, in general the GTI's engine is very tappety sounding unfortunately, and very diesel like!
