New thermostat fitted? How much should I be expecting quote wise?

Need a new thermostat fitting as the temp gauge keeps dropping when driving. Pretty certain it's stuck open so the faster is go, the lower it reads.

Been quoted by the garage who did my Cambelt and water pump, £155.21 inc vat all in.
It siounds too cheap to me but could be wrong. Waiting on VW to get back to me with a quote.

What should I be expecting?

Be aware there are two stats, and IIRC three on some engines. Make sure it's the right one(s).

My car is booked in for a timing belt and water pump on Monday with Awesome Gti.

Asked them the same regarding thermostat (I have same problems as you).

I was quoted 2 hours labour at £69 per hour. Not sure if this was with considering the car will be half apart due to the timing belt anyways. Part is around £80 with the housing at dealers.

Whats this about 2 stats or even 3???

Apparently theres a main thermostat as well as inline thermostats, manual has two and DSG has three. That's my understanding of it anyway.

There's only 1 on my manual ED30 as far as I can see?

And it's not a pleasant job, so £150 sounds like a steal to me!

I wouldn't tackle it if you weren't well equiped but it can be done as a diy!

As the others have said it's usually as below:

Manual gearbox - 1 main and 1 inline thermostat
DSG - 1 main and 2 inline thermostats

Best find out which one (if not more) need replacing!

Where is the inline one?

The one I replaced is on the front of the block under the intake manifold, and yeah, it's nasty.  I didn't remove the front end though.  It was easy-ish to get at after removing the alternator and front boost / throttle pipe.

I think I'm due for a thermostat replacement too. Low temp on the motorway but a steady 90 during local town driving. Out of curiosity, am I causing any engine damage during the motorway runs? Hoping to get a few extra MPG on my long journeys too

The thermostat was approx £38 from dealers. Also purchased 2 coolant temp sensors at £22ish each but Awesome said I only needed one (Mines a DSG)

Got billed 3hours labour for the job.
