cambelt change for golf gti edition 30
« on: September 12, 2016, 04:23:30 pm »
Sorry if this has been covered before but although there are many threads about this I can't seem to find a definite answer. My car is 2007 at 33000 miles and has never been changed, should I get it changed? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it should be changed every 40k / 4 years. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I remember VW initially stated something questionable like 80k in the handbook. This has since been revised!

So should i get it done considering its way over 4 years old, even though its only at 33000 miles?

Assuming what I said is correct (wait for someone to confirm) then I'd say yes, as it's usually a case of whatever comes first between age and mileage - in your case it's age.

The belt is nearly 10 years old, so absolutely get it done!  Rubber degrades over time from the constant hot / cold heat cycling.  It's not always about the mileage, which is why 10 year old tyres aren't a good idea either

When I got mine done last year at the stealer, I was told it was 4 years / 40K.

Interestingly, it seems some dealers are STILL stating the old erroneous 80k schedule! Namely JCT600 that Bonelorry spoke to. Bit dodgy.

I found an old invoice saying the cambelt and waterpump was changed back in 2009 so I have booked it in to be done this saturday.

My Edition 30 is a 2008 and has covered 41K Miles, It had its first Belt and Waterpump in 2012. Its only covered 18K Miles since then but as its 4 Years I am getting it done.

VW say 5 Years or 80K but I always go off Every 4 Years or 60K Miles!

Mine is getting done in a few Weeks  :happy2:

Thanks for the replies. I've been quoted £410 all inclusive of parts, labour and VAT from an vw independent garage, does this sound a little steep? Another vw independent quoted me £390 but said they wouldn't be able to do cambelt or waterpump on a saturday.

I had mine done in 2013 17K ago but im having mine done on the 26th along with some other bits, bit paranoid about things not being changed for years regardless of a booklet. oil is meant to be 10K isn't it? mine gets dropped every 6 months regardless of miles otherwise my car would have had 1 oil change in the last 4 years with the next due in 1100 miles time!  :scared:

I'm having the following changed for £416 inc VAT

cambelt
tensioner
water pump
auxiliary belt
anti freeze

10,000 would take me a while for and oil change, it would take someone like @maxitrol  15 years to do that mileage
