Just bought a Golf without a DPF
« on: September 14, 2016, 04:35:25 pm »
Hi all,

I've just picked up a TDI GT Sport 170 which was advertised as having a DPF, yet I was told by the seller that he'd had it removed and remapped. stupidly  ... I didn't do any research into the laws relating to removing the DPF, and bought the car.

Unless I'm able to find an MOT tester that can turn a blind eye, this car is going to fail it's MOT next year.

Is it at all possible to re-install a DPF? and if so, what kind of cost would this be?

My wife is giving me an ear-full for not doing my homework on this

It depends how the DPF is taken out, if the filter element is gutted out while the shell is intact then you could technically get away with it since to the tester the "DPF" is still visible. If its completely removed and the tester is aware that it should have one then yes you would be in trouble, unfortunately they are not cheap as you're looking at least a grand for those.

However DPFs doesn't really give any benefits to the driver, it's a restrictor that will eventually clog up and adds financial burden to the owner. In a weird sense taking out the DPF means that you won't have to worry about it clogging up and going to limp, making your car a bit more reliable as a result!

If I was in your situation I wouldn't worry one bit. As others said it's one less big bill at the end of the day and might even get a few more mpg from the mod. And as long as the dpf shell is still visible, Mr mot man will not know.

Thanks for the replies.

I've just had a gander underneath, and I'm guessing this is where the DPF used to be?

Will just have to wait and see what happens at the MOT, and be ready to fork out if I need to get another installed.

That looks standard to me!!
The dpf is up beside the turbo..not visible in the pic.
Another useful way to check is if rear tailpipes are black with soot...the dpf is most likely gutted
