Stupid DSG question ?

This might seem really stupid but bear with me please trying to get my head around something.

So your sat at a uphill junction a traditional automatic you have a torque convertor that will hold your car and creep with a bit of acceleration and your not wearing any components.

In a dsg car it's twin clutch so you get to the same junction and your holding on the junction, will it not be wearing the clutches away is it not the same as sat riding the clutch in a manual and eventually the clutch would go.

Can this happen with DSG gearboxes or am I missing something ?

the clutches are designed to slip in certain scenario's it is good practice to leave a gap. but the clutches can take it. it takes a fair bit to wear them out

That video kind of explained, do vw dsg boxes fully disengage the clutch when your foots on the break does anyone know ?

Also because I'm thinking of buying a dsg golf what sort of mileage can you expect to replace clutch packs?

The clutch packs are pretty robust. Ive only known of people changing them on higher mileage cars running silly power.
In other words, dont worry about it

Oh but you are because traditional torque converter autos also use clutches  :wink:

Traditional autos and DSG are very similar, except for the torque converter (aka fluid flywheel) on the former.

It's excessive heat and load that kills clutches, both in autos and manuals.

Yes - believe the DSG disengages the clutch when you are stopped. However, I don't like how the DSG slips the clutch into 2nd most of the time in traffic above 5mph, so I leave it in manual and let 1st gear take the work it should do...!! I know they are hardy boxes, but it seems 2nd takes more drive than first gear does in DSG auto mode...! I might be wrong..., but just my take on it!

I wouldn't be too concerned. Mine has 131k miles on it. I have over 330bhp and 363 lb*ft, and it runs a 12.8s 1/4 mile, and I've used launch control many many times on the road and the track...which does allow clutch slippage before fully engaged and still it works as it should.
