ED30. Timing Belt and Chain?
« on: September 23, 2016, 03:22:52 pm »
Hi All,

I just read somewhere that the MK5 Gti has both a belt and chain? I've booked myself in for the belt change in Oct but do I need to change the chain aswell?

If so, how much is that?

Yep. A belt drives the exhaust cam, and a chain drives the inlet cam.   You only need to change the chain if the engine is very clattery at idle when hot.  The noise is way louder than the normal injector / fuel pump.  It sounds diesely in the cabin.

I was so paranoid I took it to a local mechanic who has had a few gtis and s3's. He said considering the mileage its actually quiet.

Relief :happy2:
