part numbers, oem Vs. modded
« on: September 23, 2016, 03:13:44 pm »
Apologies if this has been done before, if so I didn't find it.
I'm thinking of something like a list of service parts by engine code but all in one place and sticky, then maybe another column with alternative parts that would be better it you were at stage 1 or more.

Something like:

Engine Code BYD

Spark Plugs
OEM - BOSCH 0242245576
Stage1 - BOSCH 0242245576
Stage 2 - something cooler

Engine Oil
OEM - 5w30
Stage1 - 5w40 Quantum Platinum or Millers Nanodrive

THought or additions?

Being new to Gti ownership I have not had time to make a full list of recommended mods/upgrades.

But so far my shopping list is;

NGK Iridium BKR7EIX spark plugs

OEM R8 Red Ignition Coil Pack Set coil packs

Ferodo DS2500 brake pads

Subframe Bolts and Shims: N90823501 - 7M3499349A

Audi RS4 Fuel Return Valve

Divertor Value Revision G+ GFV mod?

Just wondering about a couple things on your list.

R8 Coil Packs?  Pretty sure there is zero advantage in having them, other than their colour.  Otherwise, if your coil packs work, then no point in changing them.  I think some people do change to R8 packs because they have fitted some induction kit which means they can no longer use their stock engine cover, and so it injects a bit of colour to the bay.  So if it is purely an aesthetic change, then fair enough.

And the DV Rev. G.  As long as you already have a rev C or above, I believe, there is no point upgrading if your planning GFB-DV+.  The Solenoid is the same, which is the part you keep with the GFB-DV+.  So That also seems like a waste of money.

Unless, of course, you are already needing new coil packs, and your DV Solenoid is gone, in which case, fill your boots.

I also beleive that the RS4 valve is only really required when going stage 2+.  So as your list of mods is purely service / aesthetics at this stage, I'd leave that until your mapping your upgraded HPFP'd engine mods.

Apparently they've been tested and found to have a slightly higher firing coil resistance, which must mean the coil is longer than the black ones, and therefore a beefier spark.  How much beefier has never been confirmed though.  Probably barely anything in it tbh.  And there's a lot of what I suspect to be cheap copies out there, from American parts suppliers.  How much are they from the dealer compared to online suppliers?

I've been stage 1 on my Eddy for ages now and still use OEM plugs and black coils.   Personally I would only switch to a colder plug if the OEM ones are proven to cause a misfire at high boost.  A number of people running Stage 2+ use OEM plugs without an issue.

Agreed on the DV+  :happy2:

I think a few people having misfires and using a bit of oil has translated into internet gospel that you MUST run NGK 7s, you MUST have Millers Nanodrive etc etc.  Not true. Take each case on it's merits and avoid throwing parts at a problem without deeper investigation first.  Well, that's just me!

To be honest I didnt know this. Being new to the scene I was under the impression that these bits should be upgraded to said parts.

I didnt know about the solenoid being the same. You just saved me a few quid. Great stuff exactly what forums are about.
