fuel cuts - P1062-002 CONTROL RANGE NOT REACHED
« on: September 26, 2016, 10:46:04 am »
Hi all,

Hoping somebody can help.
My gti has a stage 1 RTECH MAP

What started off as a simple problem and what i thought was a simple fix has turned into a mystery.
I started having fuel cuts and hesitation above 3k in 3rd/4th gear. So when I'm on the motorway flat out the car just stopped at 120mph and i had no control of the pedal, wait 10 seconds and car comes back to me.

Mechanic diagnosed the problem as the sensor on top of the HPFP was cracked. So after buying a HPFP off this forum with a 'perfect sensor' it arrived with a cracked sensor :congrats: (you know who you are).
Went to TPS bought a brand new HPFP and cam follower. Noticed that my cam follower was not worn out as they normally do but more indented, as if someone had punched the face of it?? Mechanic has never seen one like that.. Checked the cam lobe and still seemed smooth. So after all that, took it for a drive, seemed fine. Car was pulling like normal. Few days later the problems comeback..
P1063-002 CONTROL RANGE NOT REACHED. since then i have changed the fuel filter and check the cam follower again and it seems perfect.

What can i do next?
Im seriously gutted about this, as I'm now putting the car back to stock and having to sell it due to getting married!
If i could fix the car, i would love to keep it. Im guessing the car will be fixed if i take the map off as its not asking for too much fuel that way.

Please help
Thanks
GT

The best thing you can do is some live logging with VCDS. This will show you your requested fuel pressure and actual fuel pressure, across the revs, and gives you much more info to help you pinpoint your problem. It could be that your map is requesting too much fuel for the standard high pressure pump. It could be your low pressure pump. Or it could be something else. Without doing proper logging you're reduced to guesswork based on a fault code.

When I went Stage 2 R-Tech (a map apparently calibrated within the tolerance of the standard high pressure pump) I also got fuel cuts, just like you describe. At this point I was confident, but not certain that it was a fuelling issue, but after logging the data was there in black and white telling me the map was simply requesting too much. So I had the Loba fitted and the fuel cuts were sorted.

I'd suggest finding a specialist  (or helpful forum member) who can do some logging with you. If you can get a file saved from the logging that clearly shows the map is requesting too much fuel for a standard pump, send this over to Niki and explain the situation. He should be able to revise your map so it's not so fuel hungry, hopefully without a charge.

In an ideal world you'd fit a Loba or APR pump and let it deal with the fuel demands, but I get the feeling that's not an option for you considering your circumstances!

Don't rule out something else though. Until you've done a good logging session you won't know for sure. Hope that helps pal.

Hi mate,
I understand all that, however the cars been stage 1'd for a very long time. for over 18months and I've never experienced something like this - so I'm unsure if its map related..
Will def get some logs done with my mechanic this week.
I will try and post them up on here

Thanks for the advice

No worries mate, hope you sort it.

Mine's in at Statller as we speak for a mystery intermittent misfire. I actually did some logging a few weeks ago with the help of Tfsi_Mike (top bloke) but the car behaved perfectly at the time so we were none the wiser. Got some refurbed injectors going in to at least eliminate one more part of the puzzle. Anyway...

So much for German reliability. Intermittent faults are the nemesis of the car enthusiast. Hopefully you can get some meaningful data from the logging and make some progress from there.

Let us know how you get on.
