Horrid noise on start up at the engine turns over
« on: January 24, 2010, 03:51:37 pm »
Hello there,

Just taken delivery of my 2007 Gti totally standard car, tyhe car has 53000miles on the clock and has just been a rep mobile going up and down the motorway. Full VW service history.

The car is/was low on oil, so I have just topped it up with the Castrol edge 5w30 as other topics recommended.

As I start the car is makes a bad rattle n strange noise that I cant put my finger on, almost sounds like a diesel, then once its running its fine.

Has anybody else had this problem? Any solutions? It will be going to the dealer to find out whats going on but I would imagine alot of you out there now just as much/more than the dealer

Cheers

Tom

there have been a few posts about this, some sounding more like oil burners than others. One member i think had a fan belt or fan replaced due to the noise. Mine does sound diesel ish most of the time till its warm too

Cheers, it seems slightly better now with more oil in, I'll still be taking it to the dealer this week and see what they say, I'll search through and try and find some of the other threads

Lol, the GTI makes an awful 'clattery' sound on start-up! Many many of my friends regularly take the p!ss out of me for having a car that sounds so shyte when starting up!

Yeah mine sounds the same on start-up. A loud clattering is how it is best described! Then once its running it settles down into a tappety noise - again another trait of the engine.

Apparently theres a very good reason for the clattery noise, hopefully for you one of the more knowledgeable members on here will come along to explain it, because I can't  :ashamed:

My 2007 Ed30 sounds rattley on start up...especially these past couple of really cold months. However, once the car warms up the engine noise settles down. The more i read on the forum, the more my mind is put to rest that the nasty start up noise is not uncommon to the engine.

quick update,

the oil top up made quite a big difference to the noise, wasnt anywhere near as bad, took it to the dealer today and the mechanic had a look at it, and said it was fine, he recommended doing a full oil and filter change anyway after it had been running on low oil, and explained that the FSI engine just makes a rattley noise on start up
