Check oil cold or hot ?

Sorry about the schoolboy questions but there doesn't seem to be a definite answer. I checked oil cold and is trading half way on dipstick.

It should be checked cold meaning that it should of drained back into the sump.

Ok just checked manual and says either is fine.

No point checking the oil level if half of it is running round the engine
