TFSI Query
« on: October 19, 2016, 10:37:46 pm »
This has been asked before, I'm sure, but I can't find the answer directly. In short, once you strip any 2.0 TFSI engine (as found in the mk5 Golf GTI, ED30, S3 etc.) are they all the same?

Mainly thinking about building the engine up for my 6R but if there's no difference between the block and head of all TFSI engines then I'll source a second engine and build it up outside the car. That way I can do it slower time and for less than paying a tuner to do it.

I've also been thinking about doing this and I'm 99% sure that all the blocks are the same but the heads are different, or at least the cams are, CDL being the best ones. Obviously the Pistons and rods are different as well but that doesn't matter if you're stripping it down and rebuilding it.

To be fair, if I'm going down the GTX3071R route, then I may upgrade the cams as well although I don't think it's really needed for 600bhp?

The head is different, I think. CDL flows the best, just like the inlet cam has a bit larger lobe. Check ETKA to compare which part number each engine has or ask someone who knows how to work well with ETKA to do that.

I haven't read anything about cam upgrading. Just valve springs, rods and pistons... Maybe contact @vRSAlex or Statller Power Developments.

There is a few people running different cams but it isn't necessary. It would be worth contacting Statller about it as they have done a few of them now with great results.

Ah, so there are differences in the core design then... Maybe I'll just have to park up the 6R in the unit while I use the mk2 Driver for daily duties.

My friend Andrew's 6R is currently at Statler. It's running big power and he has cams fitted. Says it made a big difference

You could try and source another CDL with a cracked piston or something as they would be getting replaced anyway, or buy a cheap AXX/BWA block and try and get a CDL head if you wanted to build it and still be able to use the 6R

As far as I can ascertain from various internet sources, the K04 engines have 4 bolt main caps, a different material for the cylinder head and different pistons (Compression reduction).  The rest is the same I believe.

Why not buy a cheap CDL and forge it then sell your old CDL when you remove it from your 6R?

Yeah, as the prices of CDL engines come down that may be a more viable option.

Anyone got the cylinder head part number for a CDL cylinder head? Can't be bothered to go look at my own engine to find it right now.

Thanks mate. Going to keep an eye out for a cheap CDL head or complete engine, slowly build it up in the background for my 6R I reckon.
