Cam chain + tensioner, or adjuster as well?
« on: October 08, 2016, 01:17:18 pm »
My '06 sounds really quite 'diesely' when warm and after research have concluded it needs a new cam chain and tensioner (Hopefully not adjuster too!). I've been quoted by Midland VW (with genuine parts) to do:

£895: updated cam adjuster housing, cam shaft adjuster, cam chain, cam chain tensioner and the oil pump pick up pipe
or
£360: chain and tensioner.

Without taking the car down there they've suggested I do the bigger job, but is it necessary? Thanks

How many miles has the car done? As they are pretty noisy on idle do to the injectors.

115k, you can hear it inside and outside the car, I'm sure it's not right...

Bit more than I was hoping for if I'm honest! I don't know whether to bring it back to Evans Halshaw, I just feel they'll say there's nothing wrong with it. I guess I want reassuring that if the chain snaps a few months down the line, I'll be able to get it repaired under consumer rights act etc.

If it's a knock knock chug chug type of noise it'll be the chain. Injectors make more of a ticking noise.

Does anybody have any experience in these parts failing? I just don't know if this should be urgent or something to get around to in a few months?
