Engine Light Flashing and Coil Pack Advice
« on: October 08, 2016, 01:42:40 pm »
Have a GTI 57 plate DSG...

Was giving it a bit of a thrashing this morning and engine management starting flashing (presumed because i have no fuel)

just now it came back on again will full tank of fuel after heavy acceleration....

Is this the coil packs and spark plugs that are gone? if so which ones are recommended heard the r8 ones are the ones to go for, seen these on ebay

going to the GTI Festivsal tomorrow at santapod and was hoping to give it a go at 1/4 mile lol....

When I had flashing EML it was coilpacks but also accompanied with a horrid misfire. Went away with Ignition cycle, didn't happen again, and were replaced under warranty.

I'd just replace all the coils and spark plugs anyway, cheap and easy to do.

I'm at VW Festival tomorrow, maybe see you on the strip :)

Coil pack & spark plugs as mentioned above id change both, in my opinion the R8 coil packs made no difference performance wise over standard.

I believe the R8 coils are just for show and don't provide any performance benefits.

If you can get the car scanned rather than blindy swapping bits as may not be the cools or plugs.

Also when my coils went I rang vw as there was a recall on certain ones and mine were those ones so got all 4 replaced for free

As said above, if you get a chance to hook up to a VCDS at the Festival you will get a definite answer as to which Coil pack is gone (if it is a coil pack?)

Replacing with the red coil packs, as others have said,  seems to be pretty much just for show as far as I can see

I replaced my standard coils with the red ones and I have noticed no difference in performance improvement.

Just as a side note; if you are a stickler for part numbers, and original parts, it is worth noting that the red coils from awesome are "oem equivalent" and do not have Volkswagen/Audi part numbers stamped on them!

AKS tuning sell the coil packs with the original part numbers on them.

I ordered mine from Awesome before I realised they are "OEM equivalent" as opposed to full OEM.

I spoke to Awesome about it and they assured me that they are the identical coils from the same production line etc, etc. However, if I was doing it again I would order them from AKS :happy2:

Glad you got sorted but maybe worth getting the part number and ringing VW and if on recall then swap them back in and get replaced. then you could sell one set or keep as a spare
