cleaning the exhaust

What's the best way to get it shining again? Mines black and can't get it clean!

Search a few threads. I've done at least two posts one of which details my 10-step plan for attacking filthy exhausts.

Suffice to say you'll need engine degreaser, autosol metal polish and a lot of elbow grease!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Taken from another thread mate; (I think this was kindly supplied by VC or Jules a while back)

1. Spray engine degreaser in and around the exhaust tips. Leave for a good while.
2. Agitate with brush (I use a cheapo alloy brush from halfrauds), wipe.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 several times.
4. Start the car up and gently dab the throttle to get rid of any remaining loose crap.
5. Clean using WD40 and MF cloth
6. Dry with cloth and apply polish
7. Work polish using 00-grade wirewool if necessary
8. Work polish using green side of washing up sponge if necessary
9. Work polish using MF cloth
10. Buff off with clean MF cloth

Erm no that was me. Hence why I said to search for it. I was on the iPhone which made it a bit difficult to search, copy and paste.

A note for people: if your exhaust tips are new, don't use wirewool since it may cause fine scratches. Just use a MF cloth and autosol.

I would honestly recommend getting something decent to sit on and wear rubber gloves. Sitting on the ground hurts your backside but makes it easier. Gloves because the exhaust stuff takes ages to get off your hands.

Ah ok.

Jules posted before you though on a similar thread I started last year as I was looking for the same advice  :happy2: They were the steps I was thinking of instead;
