Front wheel arch linar lip

Does anyone know what that lip is that sticks out on the front wing on the mk6 r's? It looks like it's part of the wheel arch linar, only sticks out a few mm and is maybes a few inches long, it's postioned around where the bumper and wing come together

I've noticed on new JCW mini cooper the arches stick out a few mm to stop road debris hitting side of car. looks like a great idea  :happy2:
