Best exhaust system for gti

Holla,

had my gti a few days now and loving it, but it is a bit too quiet I find even when going for it as I am having to use the rev counter to shift as I can't hear the engine clearly enough.

At the moment I can only afford a cat back, so do they turn any lights on, do they require a remap, and which one out of miltek bcs scorpion or cobra is best.

After a non resonated system, and eventually it will have a decat 3" downpipe and a stage 2 remap so looking for something compatible.

Nothing too rowdy, and not too drony on the motorway, just a nice note when gunning it

In the exact same boat as you mate, going to check out a friends milltek this weekend.  Looking on YouTube they are a quite and not too loud.

So, this is a bit left-field, but someone's got to try out JC Weldfab in Wellingborough for a GTi exhaust!

They're a welding specialist and make some incredible stuff in there; exhausts, roll cages, intercoolers, even furniture...the quality of work is exemplary, really nice guys, and they have extensive dealings with motorsport (inc F1).

Here's the system they made for my RS:



200 cell sport cats, fully mandrel bent, exhaust valves from a Bentley.

And it sounds amazing!

I went back there for an ali undertray too, again brilliant job.

They priced up a golf GTi cat-back exhaust for me at around £600; however problem for me is mainly logistics. My wife uses the golf everyday, and JCWF will need it for a few days.

It'd be great if someone tried it out and reported back - I'm sure they wouldn't be disappointed.

I'm removing the exhaust tonight and
Downpipe and sports cat £350 the whole system is only a year old
And for the catback £320 let me know what you think bud

Fit a downpipe.

Deeper tone, quite on idle for around town but an animal when you hit boost!

Yeah I've got a downpipe + standard cat back on mine.  I like it.  Meatier at idle but OEM quiet every where else, which suits and old guffer like me.

I've noticed bugger all in terms of performance improvement though.  Maybe my Stage 1 map needs tweaking a bit.

Really? I noticed an immediate improvement when I had a full Powervalve fitted (even made the clutch slip). That was on the existing Stage 1 R-Tech map. After Stage 2 it felt like I gained the same again. In fact, from memory it went like this:

Stage 1 - 243bhp 296lb/ft
Stage 1 & exhaust - 260bhp 320lb/ft
Stage 2 & exhaust - 270bhp 345lb/ft

You should definitely feel some gain from the downpipe. As I understand it the vast majority of the restriction is from the downpipe/cat and not the catback section. But maybe that's not the case after all? What downpipe is it?

All you guys umming and ahhing over downpipes, cats, whatever, just hold on until the new year (saving cash in the meantime) and I'm sure @Powervalve Nige will oblige another group buy.

That's what I did, and I'm so damn happy I waited. Apart from the power and torque gains I posted above (I've got graphs to show this if anyone's interested) the noise of the thing still puts a big smile on my face. In fact I've recently noticed something new; usually going from 3rd to 4th at full chat I'm now getting a nice 'POP' between gears. I'm on a Loba pump now so the extra grunt might be something to do with it. But whatever, it's mega. And I know it'll handle anything a k04 can throw at it when I go down that road. You get what you pay for.
