Yeah it really is a soul destroying thing to do.

I usually axle stand the car a little higher and use a large bar 800mm or so to crack it, then wratchet it off

I don't have a snapon ratchet...

But do have a 3/4" drive 4ft breaker bar...and a 14lb sledge hammer....

Should i have gone for the snapon?  :stupid:

They are a horrid set of bolts to undo! I had to do my osr wheel bearing and these two bolts took me longer than anything! In the end, long are and a whole heap of power!!!

It all depends on how often you use tools. I work in a body shop so use ratchets, sockets, spanners etc 5 days a week so it makes it worth spending the extra on snap-on stuff due to the constant use and it's lifetime guarantee so doesn't matter if you break it as it will be free to repair or replace except on electrical which is 1 year warranty

I'm trying to build up as much knowledge as possible for the various jobs on the MK5. What a pain to have such hassle to remove what should be something simple like a caliper carrier :sad1:

Cut the very tip off the splined end of the bit, thereby allowing it to sit further into the bolt. This will give you enough clearance to get a ratchet on.  :happy2:

I think MKMG76 may be on to something there...your spline bit sems very "deep". Shorten it down a bit as he says.

Sorry, but I can't leave the snapon ratchet thing alone just yet...

Done this job plenty of times, and lost skin and years off my life. I have never actually thought about changing the bolts for something simpler like a hex head. Could be done i suppose?

I feel your pain (and frustration). If it makes you feel any better, I gave up doing mine and booked it into the garage where they charged an hours labour to do both sides (pads and discs) on the rear. I've got better things to do with my time than spend hours (literally) getting stuck bolts off.

Fronts weren't a problem as you can get a good long breaker in there (plus about 1m pipe), but there's no room to do much with the rears. Managed to get the top bolt off on one side (after an hour), but the bottom one wasn't budging for love nor money.

It's like anything mate you get what you pay for, cheap ratchets are arite but if your using them every day they don't last long. I have a set of three snap on ratchets that Iv had for about 5 years using them every day and they still perform like new where as Iv had cheap ratchets that have lasted weeks and smashed my knuckles when they've broke

Been a mechanic for 10 years and my snap on ratchet never broke when abusing it with a 'extension' lol.

Like above though, a long breaker bar is whats needed :)
